ParticipantI’ve an old Tricity “under the counter” with ice box fridge (Model: 34983).
It used to need defrosting about twice a year and took about 45 minutes.
It now need defrosting about every 6 weeks and takes about 2 hours to do eve nin warm weather.
Can anyone please advise me if there is a simple way I can fix this problem?

any fridge that ices up is getting more moisture inside. since the door is the only way it can get in i would take a look at the door seal and make sure it is closing properly all the way round

The door seems to be closed alright. Is there any way to check if it isn’t?
Also, is there any reason why it should take so long now to defrost?
Thank you Dave.

Dave of electrofix replied to my previous query saying the door might be at fault.
How can I check this? It seems to be alright.

you need to look at the door from the side and make sure the door seal is in contact all the way round. and gaps and moisture will get in

As far as I tell the seal is alright. How can I check for certain?

I’ve been advised that why I have to defrost the fridge about every 6 weeks is because the door may be faulty. As far as I can tell the edges are ok. Is there any way I can check for certain. Also might there be some other problem?

I’ve merged all three threads to one.
Putting multiple threads for the same issue only serves to confuse and confound as, you cannot read it in one place and many people won’t mess about jumping between posts so, please keep it to one post for one problem.
If it’s thick smooth ice it’s water.
If it’s water in one of those it’s all too possible the insulation has broken down and, there’s really no way to fix that reliably. It can be done but, it’s not heap, not DIY and you’ve a 50/50 chance at best it’ll work.

Alan,
A quick check on the door seal – obviously inspect the seal itself all the way round, the flexible plastic can split inside the fold/ concertina shape and this may not be immediately obvious. The other check is to slip a credit card between where the seal contacts the fridge body when the door is shut, and slide the card along, feeling to see if the card is being gripped equally all the way round. This should identify any gap where the seal isn’t properly contacting the door frame.

I’ll check round the seal later today and send a new reply tomorrow.

Does it seem to be continually running for if so given the age of it the compressor may be worn out and this can cause the ice box to build up ice quickly if so its beyond repair as it has an R12 system which is no longer used.

I’ve the card method mentioned recently and that seems alright.
The fridge isn’t running all the time and although I’ve timed it, it seems to be about the same as it always has been. -
