Hello,
I think my Zanussi RW 801 (35 year old) is dying as last couple of washes has left little lumps of a putty like substance on clothes. I guess this is the door seal or some hose inside that is falling apart. So can spares still be found for the machine and is it worth fixing or time to go shopping?

Yeah, sounds like something is breaking up and you probably won’t get parts for it now I’m afraid.

Have you have been using those liquitabs with the gungy residue? This is common if low temperatures are always used with certain types of liquitab. The residue is like clear to grey slimy ‘bluetack’ type deposits. Try a 90 degree service wash with bio powder first; see if that helps.
Looking mechanically, the gunge could be the door seal or rear bearing housing to tub seal (also grey) – one or both could be soft and sticky by now but both are still readily available. Enamelled metal outer tub and stainless steel inner drum…… little to cause grey gungy deposits apart from the culprits mentioned above.
The RW801 was the same as the Z818T / 918T series – bulletproof machines – Zanussi stuff is a mere shadow of what it was. Shame; but again it illustrates this industry’s ‘race to the bottom’ mentality where the price ticket always wins over quality and longevity.Re: Zanussi RW 801 Bits of putty like substance on clothes
aqualectric many thanks for your reply.
I used persil powder for years and normally use Fast Coloured wash for both coloured and whites and Woollens for wool. However this last box of powered I bought was Fairy non Bio so maybe it is it. Although after starting this thread I checked the door seal and some gunge had accumulated in the folds so I cleaned it all up and it does not look like it is disintegrating. Also I removed the detergent draw and gave it a good clean. But looking inside the hose that leads from detergent draw to drum looks bit manky so wonder if it is that that is failing.
I found on ebay a door seal but could not find the hose from detergent draw to drum, any ideas where I can find one please as seems a shame to dump the machine as still does a wash or two a week, maybe time for major service 🙂

If someone reminds me tomorrow I’ll trawl the old stuff and see what I can find… back to microfiche and old manuals I expect. Probably like a lot of the cold war era stuff! 😆
