Hi, there is a small leak from underneath a free standing Hotpoint WMT01. First noticed a trickle of brown water (rust?) near the end of its cycle, cleaned it, then saw a trickle of clear water the next day when it was off, haven’t used it since. It has been pulled out and all visible pipes seem fine, so not sure where it is coming from. Any ideas? It is a few years old now, so would it be worth calling an engineer to look at it?

A pool of brown, rusty water means only one thing. The water seal to the main bearing has failed and the bearing is now rusting away.

Is the drum noisy when spun by hand?

Even a simple bearing repair on one of these is quite extensive and expensive TBH. 🙁

Thank you iadom for your reply. No, the drum is not at all noisy when spun by hand. The time before last that it was used, it made a lot of noise whilst spinning the washing at the end, but last time it was used when the leak was noticed it was normal, and setting it to spin now whilst empty it is normal too.

The rusty water comes from the bearings 99{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of the time. On rare occasions the large jubilee clip around the black rubber sump hose can become rusty if it leaks in that area. The very least it would need to repair is a main bearing and seal change if the leak is from the bearings.

A careful look with a decent torch should reveal if it is the hose clip. Bearing seal leaks usually show down the back of the outer drum, dead centre.
