ParticipantHi all,
Sorry this is a bit wordy.
I have an 8 year old Miele W1613 which has been getting progressively noisier on the spin cycle. I’ve checked the inner drum for movement, trying to rock it backwards and forwards I can’t feel any movement. On the normal wash / rinse speeds it is quiet with no rumbling or grinding noises.
I changed the dampers/shock absorbers thinking this should help, but when changing these noticed that the drum suspension springs weren’t all at the same level. There are four fixing points on the drum for the springs, two at the front and two at the back. The springs attach at the top to the frame, and at the bottom the four fixing points which look like they have two possible positions, one higher than the other by about an inch.
The springs on my machine were attached to the top position on three of the drum fixing points, but attached to the lower position on the remaining one (the front right I think).
Figuring that part of the problem causing the drum to bang around so much was that the springs could be over stretched and also not all at the same position, I shifted all of the springs to the lower mounting point.
The drum now sounds even noisier, banging around much more on the spin cycle, so after a couple of cycles I have stopped using it.
My questions: should I have just replaced all the springs? Has moving the spring positions made the problem worse? Is it possible the new shock absorbers are duff (or maybe have the wrong damping all together)? Is there something else I’m missing, like in the software.
Cheers for any advice.
The rest of the machine seems to be in good shape.

So on proper spin this machine sounds very noisy………is it a loud knock knock noise? Stretched springs are unlikely. Miss fitted springs debatable as to the cause and no play up and no down in drum relative to the tank is detected. If you want an opinion I think you still have a fractured internal drum spider arm but nearer the hub ( bearing shaft ) than would usually be the case i.e the fracture is at the thickest part of the casting rather than the more usual thinner part near where the spider arm attaches to the drum and thats why nothing is overly obvious. If you`ve changed the lower suspension legs and they are the right parts, and I`d be surprised if they were wrong or even if wrong not that wrong to cause a problem, other than split chassis welds it is sounding like a spider arm fracture itself causing the noise or throwing the whole load off kilter. And if so at only 8 years old the machine has been a disaster relative to how much these things cost relative to normal household usage. If you can suss this it would be good for us all if for no other reason as to prove a long held belief of one covering the full spectrum of washing machines irrespective of their purchase cost. I hope you can suss this, I hope it is not the drum spider but if so please up date your post either way. Thanks.

Thanks for the comment/suggestion – although I’ve not had time to get the back off, pretty sure it’s not the spindle. When I replaced the springs and dampers, and there was still a lot of noise, I tried first pushing on the dampers from the side – that reduced most of the “clacking noise”, but the banging was still happening. Pushing the drum back by about 1/2 an inch also lifted the rear of the drum by about the same amount (and probably dropped the front a bit) – and that seem to stop the banging, and doing that while applying pressure to the dampers pretty much removed all the clacking/clattering etc.
Based on this, I think I’ll next try shifting the spring positions on the rear of the drum.
While I’ve had to spend quite a bit of time sorting this machine out, IF I get another five years relatively trouble free life out of it, I think that would be reasonable value.
Hearsay is dubious, but parents have had a Miele washer for about 12 years and spent £170 (call out plus new heating element, though it gets less abuse in that household. -
