ParticipantHi, I researched the above machine loads before buying and read up the excellent recommendation from Which. Convinced, I bought the machine 6 months ago. The main problem I have had is that it stretches clothes, often rendering them short and wide (t-shirts, for example). I understand and use the wash care labels on clothes (I’m quite a stickler here), and to my horror, t-shirts, for example, that have a synthetic wash tag and get washed in Minimum Iron or Shirts wash (40 degrees/synthetic/max 900 spin) end up almost ruined, certainly very out of shape. When I spoke to somebody at Miele at the weekend, they said I should wash t-shirts on a cotton wash – that a cotton wash uses much less water and prevents stretching. I insisted that I follow the wash care labels. Is this a valid point, actually? I mean, 100 per cent cotton garments that show a line underneath the washing temperature (indicating synthetic wash), are they actually meant to be washed in a cottons wash? Would that solve my problem? I have a Miele serviceman coming out tomorrow to see if there’s a technical fault with my machine but I really feel I should cancel him if he’s going to give me a call out charge and say the machine’s fine. I have never used a cottons wash for any of my clothes – is this my problem, please? I have had cotton PJs go very short and wide, also underwear (which specifies synthetic). Any advice on getting out the serviceman please? I shall have to act quick. Thanks

Honestly, it’s probably not the machine.
The wash care symbols are set out here:
http://www.ukwhitegoods.co.uk/help/stai … sh-symbols
The line denotes a gentle wash action, two a more gentle action.
If you wash items with either on a more harsh wash action program (cotton wash) then the fibres will be broken and over time the garments will become damaged. That could happen on one wash, could take twenty or more, there’s no way to tell as it depends on many variables including the fabric itself.
Stretching though is an odd one, usually I’d expect that to be a problem with drying, the program used or a problem with the garment but, to get it on multiple garments is very peculiar.
What the technician will do is a standard spec test in that, he’ll make sure the machine operates as it should, drum turns properly, spins, the machine fills and empties as it should and so forth. What he likely won’t be able to do is tell you what is causing that, merely that the machine is working as it should which is what I suspect you expect to happen.
Thing is, if the machine is doing what it should then the problem must lie elsewhere but in order to eliminate it with confidence you may well have to soak up the cost of it being tested.
Other things to consider though are, what detergent are you using and are these synthetic mixes?

Thanks for that. Do you think I will have to pay for the call out then (Miele machine still under guarantee) if everything is in working order with the machine (and mechanic cant find anything wrong?) Thanks for your response.

If they don’t find any fault hem it’s very likely you will get hit with a charge for the call.

Thanks. Finally, is it true that a machine cycle using less water (cottons wash) would prevent cotton or cotton/synthetic items from shrinking, as I was told by Miele? And if I wanted the machine tested fully, who would I contact, please?

I’m not quite sure I understand the logic in what they’re saying there.
It is not a concept that I am familiar with as water level should have no bearing on shrinkage to my knowledge unless Miele know something I don’t or the machine has some weird function that could account for that statement.
As to testing, you really don’t wanna know as if you got it lab tested you’re looking at a cost in the £1000’s.
