ParticipantIs it economical to do a bearing job on a Zanussi bearing FLA 1002W approx 4 years old, seems to be an awful lot of play in drum & it is very noisy? I think it will need more than just bearings..

Well you’ll need the Bearing Kit and a new two-halves tub gasket for starters. You won’t know the state of the drum shaft ’til you get it all in bits on the kitchen floor. If it also needs that shaft then add another £75 on the job for a Drum and Shaft assy. 🙁

Goatboy has found you need a drum shaft 99{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} of the time. The inner bearing usually fuses itself to the shaft and makes a dogs breakfast of it. This is coz the drum has been noisey for months, but the machine still washes, so the customer carries on using it. Saying that, I think it’s worth doing!

DO it Do it DO It !!!!!!
I love em, there was also a local man that used to sell drum spiders for £15 each or 5 for £50, He’s stopped selling them now though 😥I don’t find I have to change the spiders that often and it’s a good way to earn £100 for 2 hours work.

At least the spider is relatively easy to change, not like the dreaded rusty torx screws on Hotpoint WMA spiders.

lovely profitable job,we take the tub out, remove motor and weights on first visit,to make it light, repair in workshop, most need spiders we never fit gasket, silicon is ok, its best to remove spider bolts with the special type spanner or socket that works on the flat of the bolt head, they round off easy, totel charge £139.we use 2.5 cable wire to lift and lower tub springs 🙂

Thanks for your replies, i’ve got the customer to buy a new machine, citing that it may be too costly to repair, i got old machine for dumping so i’ll put it in the garage with all the other junk & perhaps it make me a few bob when i get round to fitting bearings in it!

I just can’t get my head round some of the repair prices I read about on this site. Why would anyone spend £139 on getting a Zanussi repaired? The last time I looked, you could buy a brand new Tricity Bendix in Argos for £180. 😯

A key part of a chargeable repair is how you sell it. If the machine has been reliable for three or four years, and the customer is happy with the results she gets from the machine, she may well wish to keep it going. Add to that the the sheer hassle of replacing it (especially in a family environment), and the delay before delivery; being able to say “Yes, I can do it now, it’s £X, and in an hour and a half you’ll be washing again” is a sure-fire winner.
Quite why anyone would want to take a Zanussi away to repair it, or not spend £2 on a tub seal is quite beyond me though.
Cheers,
Chris. -
