ParticipantHi, my Hygena APP6302 (inherited but approx 12 years old) has developed a fault. The cabinet temperature has become very erratic. With the thermostat set to 5 (max) it will cool right down to -2 degC, it then switches off and stays off for ages, going up sometimes as high as 10 degC before switching on again. These are the extremes, and its usual range is +2-+8deg. I replaced the thermostat with a brand new genuine part, but the problem persists. I can’t find a defrost heater or switch, as I thought that could be the problem, the only other bit of electrics I can find is the compressor relay, and I don’t think that could be the problem?? Help!

Could be the compressor overheating, cutting out then kicking back on when its cooled off.

Thanks for that. Doesn’t seem to be getting overly hot, but it’s certainly a possibility. If it is doing as you suggest, and it’s all well ventilated etc, which it is, then is it a sign that the compressor is failing??

Yep, if that’s what it is then the compressor will fail soon enough most probably.

also never assume the new stat is ok. would not be the first time I got a faulty new part
also you should be able to check if the compressor is being supplied but not starting. one tell tale is a click every now and then as the cut out pops out when the motor fails to startDave

Update: Further investigation indicated that the new thermostat was faulty(!), so that went back. I’ve replaced the old one for now, but temperatures are still too high, although not such a wide variation as before for some reason. It does seem to be running for a long time now, so I’m beginning think that the compressor is getting tired, as suggested above. I understand that the insulation has a shelf life too? As it’s an old fridge by modern standards I’ve decided to scrap it and buy a new one. Shame really ‘cos it’s in excellent condition cosmetically, but fed up with messing about with it now. Beko BL21 seems to be a reasonable option for about £200 any views out there?
