Wife reported slight smell of burning, possibly from power on/off switch and machine now dead (no display at all). Have confirmed power to circuit board (by multi meter) and power switch seems to be operating correctly (again by multi meter). Machine is free to turn and shows no signs of overheating, water leakage/ingress to where it should not be. Door lock switch mechanism dismantled and appears to be operating correctly. Machine is in region of 7 years old and has operated flawlessly until now. Replacement control board in region of £200. I removed this to inspect but saw no visible evidence of overheating/failure to naked eye. Any ideas of what would be the root cause?

no way to be sure of course but it does sound as if the lighting side of the board might have gone. 🙁

Hmm, spend £200 and run risk of it not resolving the issue, or cut losses and spend circa £600 for Miele machine currently on offer with a 5 year guarantee. Disappointed as ISE 10 had 10 year guarantee (until company folded) and design lifespan of 20 years. Our first washing machine and tumble dryer lasted nearly 23 and 25 years respectively (Zanussi). Replaced the motor brushes at least 3 times. Replacement Zanussi washing machine needed control boad replacement in first year (warranty) and then motor failed c. 2 years later. Miele appear to be one of the few manufacturers making machines to a decent standard with corresponding longevity.

Since the demise of ISE and the removal of Asko built product sadly, Miele are the only show in town quality wise other than V Zug in the domestic space.

And, even at that Miele seems to be headed down the “cut cost” route as well now.

Over that, Miele’s when they do go wrong are costly. Very.

Thanks for your feedback, reluctantly have ordered replacement (Miele). It’s a disgrace that manufacturers appear to be on downward spiral regarding product quality and life expectancy. I guess that is where the profits are made. Perhaps legislation should be introduced to halt the slide into the throw away society we are rapidly becoming.

The huge disappointment with ISE is that it was specifically marketed saying that it would avoid this kind of thing.

The cheap, easy supply of parts.

    Supporting local independent traders.

    The watertight “insurance backed” warranty.

Despite my whinging, mine has been essentially faultless though. Only fair to say that. Now at 7 years. But the idea I’d save the environment, support local traders and have a machine that could easily last 20 years if looked after seems very unlikely. I wonder how many written off within the original 10 year warranty period?

Seems even a small fault now essentially writes them off.
