ParticipantHello, we have an LG GR359SQ no frost fridge / freezer, over 12 years old, always been very reliable but stopped freezing and chilling recently, condensor wasn’t running. We tested the PTC relay for continuity, decided it needed changing, bought a new one, fitted it, plugged the fridge back in, no joy. Unplugged it and plugged it back in straight away and the condensor kicked in. A few hours later, we have ice cubes, all good. Next morning, everything has defrosted. Could it be a faulty relay? How can we test it if it works intermittently? Might the relay be incompatible even though it looks identical? Is there anything else it could be? Penny for your thoughts please.

Is the compressor running hot?

Hi, the compressor’s not running at all now so cannot tell if it was overheating. There is no continuity in the new relay on any pair of pins (very low reading, no beep on the multimeter). So presumably the new relay is faulty? Could there be something else wrong with our fridge that kills the relay?

Yes, the compressor.

Doh!!! Is there a way of testing whether the compressor is faulty?

Metering it out is about it really along with checking for earth leakage.

How does the compressor kill the relay? Thanks.

If it’s shorted or short cycling it’ll blow it.

Morning! We had someone look at the fridge. (They happened to be fixing the washing machine under warranty) Apparently the relay on the PCB needs replacing and there was nothing wrong with the PTC relay afterall. Which is confusing as we thought we were testing correctly by looking for continuity in any pair of pins. What did we do wrong? We need to know the old PTC relay works to send the new one back (paid €50 for it, we live in France). The next problem is we can’t find the PCB relay, JW1aFHN DC12V. Is there an equivalent that would work? Thank you

why cant you find the relay seems to be a popular one

all I did was to put JW1aFHN DC12V into google

The part number on that link is different. The only in stock relay with the same part number is a used item from the US

All the original parts for it from LG are obsolete, completely unavailable now.
No shock there.

To be honest any 12v relay with the same spec will work. Each manufacturer of relays has their own numbering scheme but if it’s the right coil voltage and current rating will be ok As long as it physically fits the board Dave
