ParticipantHi Guys,
Our IKEA DATID Oven trips it’s RCD, but only every now and then.
We haven’t been able to work out any logic to it tripping and we wondered if anyone had any bright ideas as to how we might be able to diagnose this intermittent problem.
For your information, it’s the Oven only as we have a Gas Hob.
Regards,
Paul and Julie

its almost certainly an element but the problem is which one
to understand what might be going on you have to understand your trip. The trip measures the current going in and out of your house and looks for differences. If over 0.03 of an amp goes in and not out it trips. the problem comes because it is monitoring the whole house. if your oven has a leakage of 0.02 it wont trip but if you turn on something else with a leakage of 0.012 it will trip. both of these appliances will not trip on their own but will if turned on at the same time

Hi David,
Many thanks for your reply, I understand exactly what you are saying.
It’s a shame that the circuits don’t have separate RCDs.
I’ll keep an eye on what is running at the time of the trips.
Thanks again for the advice.

Paul

things are going that way with RCBO’s that way each circuit has its own trip.
reason its not common as always costDave

Hi David,
Just thought of another question, if you don’t mind.
Is there a way of testing individual appliances to see if there is any leakage at all ? (but less than an RCD measures).
That way I could test everything individually.

Paul

pat tester or a insulation tester (megger)
if its low enough will show up on a standard multimeter ohms scale
you are looking for a reading to earth. to blow an rcd it has to be under 8000 ohms. so suspect anything under 100,000.
common electrical testing expects readings above 500,000 ohmsalso if the cooker has a loose connection that start arcing that will blow the trip. that also includes the socket or main its wired to

Hi Dave,
Brilliant! I’ve got a Multimeter which I can try tomorrow,
If it doesn’t read the range I need I’ll get a Megger, because it will save loads of time and I’m sure it will come in handy for other things.
I’ve bookmarked ukwhitegoods.co.uk so when I know what part(s) I need, In the words of Arnie “I’ll be back”
Many thanks,
Paul

when you test the cooker element disconnect the wires so you are only reading that one element
and it goes without saying “make sure its switched off”
we so hate to lose a client
