ParticipantWe almost got caught with this one yesterday, and now know of 3 other appliance retailers that have had the same.
We had a phone call from someone posing as a Landlord wanting to buy some appliances. He was told what models we had, prices etc. He then rang back later on to pay for the 5 machines by card, and had organised a courier to collect them a hour later.
A few things didn’t seem quite right with the sale, and after a bit of investigating ourselves, we found out it was paid for with a stolen credit card.
We were 10 minutes away from loading £1400 on the van.
We just wanted to make people alert to this scam.March 12, 2017 at 10:18 am #446001Martin

How did you find out that the card was stolen?

It all just seemed to quick and easy from the start for our liking and things didn’t add up and we smelt a rat. We’re based in mid Devon, and the appliances were being taken to a property of his in Woking, and the first 2 cards he tried paying with were declined, but when the third card was accepted, we called the credit card company to check if it was a secure sale as it was over the phone. They told us no, and the buyer has so many days to argue it (say it wasn’t them). Thinking this was his game, we called the courier company that he had organised to pick the goods up to ask if they have dealt with him before. They had picked up 7 appliances from another retailer a few days ago and kindly told us where from. So we called them and got told that they had lost £3000 worth to the same guy with the same story.
The guy had answers for everything we threw at him before we knew all this, but we also didn’t want to upset what could have been a good sale, and good future customer.March 13, 2017 at 11:14 am #446003don

We were “hit” with this one a couple of weeks ago exactly the same scenario. Like you we smelt a rat and contacted the card company and the courier who gave us quite a lot of info about these sorts of goings on.
Thought he was a clever sod he did when we phoned him back until we told him about the card company and that he was using a stolen card.
Ours was for four appliances retail £1400.00. Would have taken a lot of turnover to make that lot up.

Now just supposing, just supposing you went ahead with these sales wouldn’t the credit card company have to take the hit rather than yourselves?

This is what we wanted to check before letting it go. They said no as it was done by phone so not a “secure sale”. They only would if it was done by chip and pin.

Payment card processing guidelines recommend that if payment is taken with the cardholder not present, the goods should be shipped to the cardholder’s registered address. Where goods are collected in person, payment should be by chip and pin.
There is a risk with all “cardholder not present” transactions, including “click and collect”. CVV code and address verification reduce the risk but don’t prevent chargeback of fraudulent transactions to the retailer by the card issuer.

A friend of mine got caught by this scam a couple of weeks ago. When he got the police involved they said its because people want quick delivery times and there isnt time to check if cards are stolen or not.
