ParticipantI have a John Lewis branded washer dryer, JLWD1609, that I believe is an Electrolux.
Yesterday I found it had not dried a load and there was a very distinct burnt smell inside the machine, but not evident outside. I started a new drying cycle and the motor that normally runs to blow air across the heater and in to the drum did not seem to run (but I don’t know if it always would and whether I waited long enough). There does not seem to be any heat either.
I turned off, took the top off and measured the following (see picture for locations)
1. Resistance of two heating elements (H1 to H3/4 and H2 to H3/4) which both seemed to be just over 60ohms
2. Resistance of three temperature sensors(?). T1 and T2 are 0 ohms i.e. closed. T3 seemed to be open circuit.
3. The motor seemed to generate a small DC voltage when spun by hand so I decided this was not dead and perhaps it was not receiving any supply.I turned the machine back on and measured
4. Voltage to motor. Difficult to do with multi-meter probes poking into connectors but got a reading above zero DC and then got ‘bitten’ so that seems to be okay – for some definitions of okay :- )
Finally connected motor again, started a new cycle. Motor ran this time although to my mind noisier and possibly faster than usual (my ears were ringing afterwards – failed bearings? or just because top was off?)
5. Voltage across heater elements (i.e. H1 to H3/4 and H2 to H3/4) seemed to lower than I would have expected, approx 20V AC
Let it run for a while and put my hand on the metal box containing the heater and didn’t feel any hint of heat.
Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance

does sound like the tumble dryer fan has jammed and the heater has tripped the overheat stat
one of the two thermostats has a reset button between the terminals. press it and the heater should restart
after that you may need to buy a new fan unit

I found the reset button on T1. It does not seem to have been tripped (T1 is closed circuit) and could not be pressed back in.
I tried to measure the voltage across the heater again. What should I expect to see? I only saw something low intermittently. Mostly there is no voltage. Is there any kind of test mode that can verify operation of the heater circuit (I seem to remember an engineer pressing some magic button combination before for an unrelated problem)? Or at least a way to be sure the heater is supposed to be active? Measuring from ground to the heater terminals shows 240V AC on all four. Is that expected?
Out of curiosity I disconnected one terminal on T1 and the machine didn’t flag this as an error – which is disappointing.
Today T3 has a resistance of ~ 6k – which looks to be plausible- I guess I messed that up before (although I did pull it to have a look at it).
Thanks
