Siemens wd14H420GB03 washer drier. Must admit the first one I have seen. Completely dead, resistor on power pcb at rear base burnt out so replace resistor reading colour bands as best I could 100ohm I reckoned. No life still afterwards. Have quoted the £184+vat for the board and the customer wants it repaired… drat! Now worried something has caused it to blow. tested with meter as best as I can. Anyone have a manual or experience? thanks in advance..

what’s after the 100ohm resistor? normally a switch mode chip and is that working ?

resistors are as far as I go on electronics these days so wouldn’t know. new resistor is now oc although not burnt out this time. Wondering if it got damaged during soldering. It already looked a ropy one when I picked it up at Maplins as the colour bands were faded so much I had to meter test it first to confirm it was the correct value.

A lot of the time when the resistor goes the switch mode chip has failed. they use the resistor both as a surge protector for the capacitors and as a fuse to protect the board. you should find a small 7 leg chip similar to TNY266PN
change that and the resistor and it could burst into life

    Thanks for the info Dave.
In the event I went for the new pcb and after a meticulous meter check of just about every component in the machine, I switch on in a fingers crossed moment…… all seems fine- job done then.
reading your post above, if the resistor is used as a fuse then I am guess it needs to be replace with one of the same wattage? Must admit I was going for a higher wattage type thinking it was under rated for the job…. would have been a mistake then. Will bare in mind for the future.

you need to look for a fusible resistor, same ohms and wattage. easily available from RS or Farnell

glad u sorted it but with only the resistor gone you were in with a good chance of sucess.

Re: Siemens waterless washer drier wd14H420

Noticed at the time that this resistor and associated components are direct off the mains, hence always powered up even when machine switched off…. has to shorten life really. Surely in these eco and H&S days, a hard on off switch should be mandated on all electrical appliances.

think the rules are something like if it draws less than 3watts then its allowed

now fire risks etc are ignored and component life is also ignored which is why some board fail
