….you could get out of this line of work? If so what would your reason be?

I think you’ll find that many, many of the guys would if at all possible bail out this industry.

Pay’s rubbish. Dealing with customers is horrid at times. Dealing with commercial clients is sometimes little better. Etc.

But the first one is probably the biggest issue, there’s no money in it these days. If you ask about you’ll find most scraping a living, maybe making a half decent wage but that’s about it.

Many from conversations I’ve had are just eeking it out till they can retire.

Talked about at almost every conference in the past five years or more and, all the while the numbers of repairers have dwindled ever downward as people leave or retire.

Which means that, especially if there’s nobody else in the area or you’ve got skills nobody else has like gas or refrigeration, you can pretty much charge what you want these days. That’s the good news.

ive been tinkering with online trading forex market , started as a hobby 3 years ago

very complex area – but you can learn to read any market with proper training

now just getting to the stage where i can take small trades .

lots of stuff on the internet on how to trade — most of it crap ive been there

you can self teach yourself but it takes a while

hoping to keep going and turn it into something to to do when i cant run around like a looney doing whitegoods

anyone interested i can recommend the best and fastest way to learn, — realistically can take at least 1 year with the proper help/training

I’m one of the “hanging on until retirement” after 40 years what else could I do? The younger generation are more computer literate, fitter and adaptable, to pretend I could train to do something else and compete with a twenty something is stupid.
It will be the same or at least similar for the youngsters now in 40 years, it was for my Grandad 50 years ago he was a cobbler.
3174 3314L 1460 1850 1504 3236H L5 L6 etc etc if you know what these numbers mean your in the same boat as me.!!!!!!!!!!

Sometimes the customers think we are making a fortune. I remember about 2 years back calling out fixing a washing machine for a foreign guy, spent about 40 mins there and charged him 45 euro. He was pleasant and nice and paid up but had to make a point ” wow you must be making a fortune getting at least 45 going to all these houses :rolls: “

    Re: Do you ever wish…..

Money used to be good as it was always cheaper to repair than replace, its almost the other way around now.
Why pay someone £60.00 plus vat for an engineer when you can get a new washing machine for £150.00.
I keep thinking i should have jacked it in when i lost my company rather than starting again.

That’s why I shut NW Repairs down a few years back, no money it, not worth doing that any longer. I saw the writing on the wall.

“Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way” – Pink Floyd.
Agree with Ken on this one the repair side of the business is a dead duck especially for those of us which depended on cash repairs and weren’t willing to get into bed with the WPs. Selling new machines at the bottom end of the market isn’t worth it, margins are too small on small volumes, customers have the right to get their money back up to 30 days – not enough money for the risks. Lots of ‘poisoned chalices’ on the repair side when you can get ‘involved with an appliance’ and wish you hadn’t (we’ve all been there) costing you time and money. However the worst bit to me is the demoralising BER side of the business – parts too expensive so you have to scrap the appliance, so somedays all you are getting paid is call out fees. I actually like repairing things and remember my advert in the early 90’s boasting of a 95{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} success rate, lucky to get a 50{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} success rate today. Oh and the customers want everything now this minute (‘Why haven’t you got a computer board on your van’) and cheap. Internet also shows public how to do ‘bread and butter’ jobs -hence fewer blocked pumps, carbons ,fan oven elements, door boots etc.Would you advise a young person to come into this business – I dont think so.

we use a contractor to do our installs he is only charging £30 per job but he does about 10-12 a day so he is earning better money than the engineers…

    Re: Do you ever wish…..

I’m self employed and split myself between being a Land Gillie/ estate worker and an appliance engineer. If I’m not up to my eyes is deer guts or pheasant s***, I have my head in someone’s rancid dishwasher!

Some weeks the appliance work pays more and sometimes the gillie work keeps me afloat. If I was offered a full time job on the estate, or they could guarantee my hours then I would drop the appliances like a hot rock, sell my stock at cost price on eBay and convert my van into a motorhome! I would rather be bitten by ticks, eaten by the wee Scottish midge and view the magnificent countryside than have to attend another call out where someone questions my prices and me having to explain to them that I don’t get to keep all the money as I have to pay out for fuel, paying for the van, van repairs, replacement parts and tools, insurances, etc, I don’t make much from my business but it keeps the wolf from the door. in fact I’m lucky some days to break minimum wage. thats before I have to sit down after work and do my accounts and invoicing instead of spending time with my family and sucking back a beer!

Brendarran, I have to say to you my friend that is a true heartfelt confession. I have to say that from you I visualise life in the raw in highlands Scotland. To me in the Home Counties, the dog eat dog world down here, you may not truly realise the enviable position you find yourself in.

Gillie, appliance repairer, all round handyman that you are. Don’t knock it and enjoy the modest but free lifestyle you live.

    Re: Do you ever wish…..

Martin, I was brought up around Yorkshire and Lincolnshire but spent a few years living in various locations around the country in big cities. I hated it and moved to Aberdeenshire to try a different pace of life. I ended up working in the oil industry and working all hours running a shore base and running my own business. 4 years ago my missus was offered a job on an island and we jumped at the chance. I have not looked back. I started my business as appliance engineer as there was a gap in the market here and things have taken off. When you are on an island you have to become a jack of all trades so I work on a country estate, fix appliances and even do mainland delivery jobs. In fact I’m off to London in a few weeks!

Saying that, as much as I like the appliance repair business I couldn’t afford to support my family and take them on holiday if I had to live off that alone.

Oh and believe me when I say there are sometimes I envy you lot in England at times. You can sit outside on a summers evening or eat outside in the garden without being pestered by midges!! ha ha
