KeymasterI have a Samsung side by side fridge freezer with water and ice dispenser.
The water has stopped dispensing, and in their efforts to extract water, my children have broken the lever that works the dispenser! So I now have two problems – firstly the water not coming through, and secondly replacing the lever mechanism. Can you help please?April 25, 2005 at 9:37 am #132897Dave_Conway

Could you check the model number please, from the rating plate inside the fridge (next to the salad bin normally). Please include the dashes etc /-
RCS1DCSV doesn’t exist according to the Samsung database.
Dave.

Hi Dave
Thanks for the speedy reply. The number is RS21DCSV. no dashes, slashes or anything.April 26, 2005 at 8:47 am #132899Dave_Conway

That’s the one 😀
OK, as far as the water goes, as long as you’ve checked the water supply to the fridge is OK, it’s really engineer time to be honest.
The dispenser, is the lever physically broken ? We had this exact model recently with the same problem and it was the pivot inside that had snapped off, and it involved replacing the whole freezer door :eeek:
An engineer can check the lever etc for you while on site.
If you need one, take a look at repairs@ and the directories.

Hi Dave
Thanks again.
The bit that’s broken is one of two curved bits which fit round a spindle which the lever pivots on.
Unfortunately I’ve lost the manual, which doesn’t help much!
I’ve now found I’ve another problem! The veg in the top salad box is completely frozen – frost all over the carrots! The display says 3C, same as always, the freezer side says -21C.
I’ve had the fridge for about 18 months with no problems – until now.

OK, first of all I would ask an engineer to check the whole thing over and diagnose the other faults before worrying about the dispenser problem as that is exactly what happened to the one I mentioned, it needs a whole new freezer door to repair that as that insert part comes moulded to it.
Daft, yes, ridiculous frankly 😕

Hi Dave
Sounds expensive, and there doesn’t seem to be an engineer in your directory near me.
Thanks for all your advice.

I live in OX28.
RS21DCSV is a white side by side without food centre but with water and ice,
Firstly on to the no water problem, this is caused by excess frost building up behind the panel at the bottom, before long you will start to here the fan catching on the ice eventually stopping the fan then losing even temperature through out the fridge. It has gone faulty!
Basically its not defrosting for long enough, either the heater is not working at all, or the heaters are turning off too soon. You will probably need an engineer.
Remember that this appliance is covered by a 2 year guarentee, being RS21 it isnt could be just over 2 years though but i would imagine its covered i.e phone samsung.Secondly the snapped lever, it doesn’t require a whole new door it can be repaired, it is a scary repair but i can assure after doing a few it works much better than the original-unfortunatly I would advise an engineer its quite complex. Again if its covered under guarentee, you might get a nice engineer that will fix it anyway despite sort of being accicdental damage.
Otherwise like has been said new door!
Hope this helpsApril 28, 2005 at 7:16 pm #132908admin

Hi Weirdjam
Thanks for the reply.
I thought that excess icing might be a problem especially as one of the kids had set the freezer temp at -21C instead of -19C, so have left it all day to defrost. Thought I would leave it 24 hours and then see what happens. Thanks for the ray of hope that a new door might be needed. It’s the bit of the lever that goes round one of the pivots that’s broken. Seems OTT to have to replace a whole door for the sake of a bit of plastic about 5mm across!
Unfortunately, I can’t find the guarantee, although I did buy with a credit card, so have the date of the purchase. Would Samsung accept that, do you think?

There would be no harm in trying to be honest if you can prove your bought it on your statement that is usually good enough, also if you bought it from a large retailer they should be able to find the transaction.
But more importantly is the serial number that states the exact date the machine was produced if you want to PM me it I can tell you when it was built.
Give samsung a ring if it was bought in the last 2 years, they might surprise you!If its just the lever that can be replaced, or if its the pivot hook that too can be replaced, although I personally use a different more secure method.
The freezer being set on -21 will show no adverse problems in fact that is quite a normal temperature for the freezer, the problem you have lies in the fridge. (The water comes in from the main into the fridge goes through the intestine looking thing, pull out the salad crispers, then back down out the front of the appliance then up through the bottom hinge of the freezer door to the tap.
Basically
Fridge has over-iced>>water in intestine frozen>>no water>>broken tap.

Hi Weirdjam
Thanks for the reply. I found all the docs including guarantee card, which has no details filled in, but does say it’s covered by Samsung for 2 years.
I rang Samsung who said that because I bought from Comet I would have to contact them, as they buy out the warranties. I rang Comet who said they do cover Samsung warranties but only for one year. I rang Samsung again who said – Hard Luck (or words to that effect) Impressive service eh?I then spoke to Trading Standards who say they think I have a good case to get Samsung or Comet to get the fault fixed, because on Comet’s receipt it states that they cover the manufacturer’s warranty. I haven’t written yet, but will be doing so.
In the meantime, I’ve defrosted the machine, and it’s going ok at the moment. I have never defrosted it myself before, assuming that it self-defrosts – is that correct?
How can I get the lever fixed?
