what colour wires go where on the connection block. which colour wires do the incoming live and neutral pair up with?

how about posting a photo so we can see what you mean as most of us would expect the normal brown and blue wires

this is the connection block for the light, motor, capacitor and control switch. missing are the blue and brown for the supply wire. I copied it on a piece of paper which I have mislaid.

short answer don’t know and it is unlikely you will get the info. just a pity you did not take a picture
my first guess would be the brown and blue wires. if it were me I would confirm using a multimeter on ohms scale

Thanks Dave, I’ll check with my meter.
I did put blue to blue and brown to brown. But the speed control worked out of sequence and the light worked with another switch. I tried the brown to the brown on the right and blue to purple. That worked, but on only two speed instead of three. Try again.
