I changed the door lock mechanism as the error code e40 came up on the display, After changing it the selected programme (after about 3 clicks from the lock) goes from the beginning of the cycle with the appropriate time displayed to 0 mins in about 20 seconds. Any ideas!!

A shot in the dark on this one!
Could be, or at least a couple of pointers, check the motor brushes to see if worn out, check the wash element as it maybe trickling to earth which back feeds into pcb and temporarily messes it around – ever inceasingly common, check the tacho magnet hasn`t fallen off the back of the motor. Check too the circulating pump motor for melted shorted out windings – this happens when the hose to the door seal gets blocked up, the pump pump`s against the blockage and over heats which can then take out the triac on the pcboard – not much fun when that happens. Also check the pressure switches and air trap though they do not usually give much trouble.
