Error Code “FP” – Whirlpool Sixth Sense AWM 8103/1 Hand wash

My washer halts, giving the error code “FP” during draining. I’ve tried the following but had no joy.

1.Cleared the front user serviceable filter (found 20p and dog hair).
2.Checked the pipe from the pump to the drain outlet.
3.Cleared the sump hose from the base of the drum to the pump (80p, some plastic, and more dog hair).

The pump still makes a noise during the drain cycle prior to the fault code being displayed, and I have managed to check that impeller blades are in tact and spinning freely.

When I had my fingers in the sump pipe during cleaning I felt a moveable ball type object at the base of the drum about the size of a ping pong ball, should this be there???

Should I completely remove the pump for closer inspection?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Yes the ball should be there…its a floating type shutoff valve.
Have another look at the drain hose for blockages…if you can disconnect it at the pump end you should be able to blow down it…if its blocked, the blockage might be at the plumbing end, especially if its connected to a sink waste pipe.
Don’t forget to completely unplug before carrying out any work.

Thanks Clive, I suspected that the ball may be some sort of valve.

I was hoping someone would reply:
“There should be nothing where the sump hose is connected to the drum, looks like you have a ping pong ball causing the error code: FP = Fast Ping pong ball” – That realy would be Sixth Sense!

I have tried blowing down the drain hose but its clear, and connected to a normal washer outlet.

Is it feasable that there could be a blockage inside the drum before the sump hose, if so how do you check it?

It is possible to have something causing the problem at the entrance of the sump hose, But it is unlikely.

You have not mentioned exactly where the waste pipe goes, Does it have it’s own seperate waste or does it plumb in to the base of your sink ??

If it is into the base of the sink check to see if there is a one way valve (usually grey), these quite regulary block up and stop machine draining, as do 5p coins and the odd button.

Get the waste pipe as low as possible and get the end into a bowl and check if the water syphons out OK, if it does then set it to drain, if there is no significant difference in the speed the water comes out, then there is a good chance the impeller has broken off shaft, and although visually it will look OK and spin freely, it won’t be able to bite on the the shaft so thefore will not spin when running.

A good way to test this is to UNPLUG THE MACHINE, get as much of the water out as you can, the filter needs to be undone so take nessisary precausions to avoid water damage.

Remove filter, Using a long pokey thing of your choice, turn the impellor round, it should “ping” if you know what I mean, if it spins freely without a ping (you’ll know what I mean if it does it) then the pump has probably had it due to the above having happened.

On the other hand, if No water comes out when you lower the hose, then you are still faced with a blockage, and as I have stated before Coins are a favorite cause of mystery blockages, they make the perfect seal across the enterance and exits of pumps and can sometimes be difficult to find.

If and only if you are competant and have removed the plug from the mains, Remove the Grey waste hose from the machine. which looking at your earlier post you are quite able to do and make sure it is empty, these also suffer from being getting clogged up with muck.

With no water in, it should be quite light. if it feels quite heavy (for a thin plastic pipe) then this could be blocked with limescale and sludge, they can be cleared but to be honest for the sake of £5 from B&Q you can get a new one, if you want to clear it, go outside, hold it like a skipping rope and hit the floor a few times and then run a hose pipe through it, you will be supprissed at just how much crap comes out. do this a few times till it’s clear, re-assembles and test.

    Hope all this helps
