I have a Proline PLC150W fridge/freezer which has developed a problem where the fridge area remains warm but the freezer is working normally.

After reading, and trying many recommended solutions on various forums, and unable to find a solution, I decided to connect the compressor motor directly to the mains, mainly to see if the thermostat could be faulty, but also to see if the compressor was working properly.

This has confirmed what I expected where the freezer compartment is working exactly as it should, but the fridge area isn’t cooling at all. There doesn’t appear to be a ‘condenser fan’ (if that is the correct terminology) so am at a bit of a loss as to what the problem may be?

    Anyone had a similar problem?

You know, overload and klixons or PTC’s are there for a reason, safety. Bypassing safety devices is a very, very bad idea. 😉

In fact, sometimes plain downright dangerous.

It’s bog standard fridge freezer, thermostat controlled so the only possibility is that the compressor is pumping weak and, as I said in another thread last night, even though the freezer seems to be freezing and it’s getting below 0?C, it’s not getting down to temperature correctly as it should.

You see that in the fridge not cooling properly as there’s not enough refrigerant circulating to it fast enough.

So basically, it’s time to scrap it.

    Thanks K for the reply

We have only had it around 15 months so I didn’t just want to scrap it. I understand the safety features but just thought I’d begin by checking if the compressor or thermostat was at fault first.

    Re: Proline Fridge/Freezer Help Please

Just one final question before I rip my hair out (if I had any) and send this to the local tip (if they will actually take it).

Over the weekend I reassembled the unit and gave it a good clean and thought I’d just give it another go. Switched it on and away she went. The freezer worked fine and the fridge started cooling so I just left it running for a couple of days.

Everything seemed to be working fine, but before I brought it back into the kitchen, I thought I test it by putting a bottle of water in the fridge and a plastic container full of water in the freezer.

During the day yesterday, the water in the fridge cooled nicely and the water in the freezer froze normally. I thought ‘bingo’ – sorted. But no! When I got up this morning the freezer had defrosted and the water in the fridge, although cool, was not has cold has yesterday.

Does this still indicate that the compressor is pumping ‘weak’? Just thought I’d ask before disposing of this, if I can find somewhere who will take it?
