ParticipantThank you for this great resource and all the people who help here.
I have done some searching but not found anything similar here or more broadly on the interwebs. I have an AEG L12710VIT washer/dryer, it is about 8-9 years old I think. I’ve never used the dryer function, and it gets relatively gentle use as a washer.
Yesterday it seems that it got half way through a cycle then tripped the kitchen circuit RCD (there’s still powder in the tray).
Now, when pressing the on/off button with the door open, you get a regular roughly once a second loud buzz.
When pressing the on/off button with the door closed, it again starts buzzing roughly once a second, and starts, slowly and rather painfully, to spin the drum.
No lights on the front panel in either case, except the power light next to the on/off button.
Here’s a video – https://photos.app.goo.gl/9fpXwg6qfQ2NH5Gt1 (click again on the video to get the audio too)
I have read the warnings about not spending money on a PCB when that’s not actually the problem… some sort of periodic short causing it to go nuts?
Many thanks for any thoughts…

Often where odd faults like this occur it is as a result of the heater going down to earth. Hence why the first indication anything was wrong was when the RCD tripped. I refer to the dryer heater that sits in the metal case at the top. The element terminals at the back. Now if you photograph those connections ( before removing so you know where they go back!). Pull the connections off and make sure they are insulated/isolated before restoring the power and trying the machine once more.
Try it and let us know. 😀

Thanks for the super-quick response… I tried
– removing the (mains voltage?) connections at the back of the dryer heater case, trying again – same problem
– also removing the (mains voltage?) connections at the left hand side of the dryer heater case – same againThere’s now no connections to the dryer heater at all, apart from a couple of low-voltage (sensor?) wires at the front.
The loud buzz when power button is on seems to be coming from the front right side – near the PCB. Is there a transformer or similar in there somewhere?
I am assuming it’s a problem with something mains voltage to so fundamentally fubar it. Not sure what to start pulling wires on next… motor or drain pump underneath I guess…? It will have to wait a couple of days as the MIL is coming to stay (!).

OK, you have at least ruled out any problem with the dryer heater. Pulling off wires from other components serves no purpose, in fact it could make the problem worse!
My guess is that when the RCD tripped the main control/Power board fused out. :(. If you were to access it and check then chances are that the circuit controlling the door lock has blown. A door lock triac on the board blackened and burnt?
Inspect the component side of the PCB for damage.

Thanks for your help – yep the main PCB is not a happy bunny.

There’s soot over components in one part of the board, and some burnt tracks – centered I think on the transformer T1. I’ve found the EWM2000EVO basic circuit diagram for a washer dryer, but following the tracks the problem could be with anything connected to J7, J7BIS, or J17. Which seems to be most of the components in the machine. 😕
At 120+ quid for a new PCB, but also diagnosing and fixing what the actual problem is, I’m beginning to think it’s going to be uneconomic to repair, either with my limited skills or by a professional…?
Do you have any other suggestions before I take it to the tip? 🙂

the very fact the display is blank means it may be a board prob
disconnect motor and wash heater.
check the connection lead from the display panel to the timerthen try it again
soot is not a problem just brush it off with a paint brush. its the high voltage attracting dust

Thanks Dave and all.
Tonight I printed off the circuit diagram and set to with a multimeter. Unfortunately it’s not looking good…. The display is entirely inoperative – and I can’t get any voltage out of J8 pins 1 and 2, which is supposed to carry 5V to the display. This is with just J6 and J10 connected, which should be carrying neutral and line respectively. The PCB is doing its buzzing thing, so there’s definitely power applied. I also tried with more connectors attached in case there’s some dependency there.
I also noticed a burnt track on the PCB near J12-2 (which goes to the door lock mechanism) but bridging that hasn’t helped.
Any more ideas before I admit defeat? It’s £120-150 for a new PCB, which I could also blow up trying to identify any other faulty parts…
Many thanks for all the help, this is a great forum.

the buzzing is the solenoid in the door lock activating over and over again trying to lock or unlock

Thanks Dave for the suggestion. In the end I found a great deal on a Zanussi replacement machine for not much more than the cost of a new PCB, so have decided to consign the 10 year old AEG to the recyling centre.
Thank you to you and all those who provide valuable tips in this forum – if the washer had been newer or the problem simpler I would have found the solution here.
