Replacement oven thermostat not working properly

Hi

I have a Homark fitted electric oven – very basic: no fan, not a double oven. When it started burning food, I ordered an allegedly ‘compatible’ replacement from Whitegoods. Its terminals are not like those on the old one and, after failing to find any help or guidance on the Internet, I decided to try the wiring in each of the two obvious configurations. In both cases the red light came on and the oven heated up, but in neither case would it stop at the requested temperature. Anyone able to offer any help, please?
