I have an Indesit IWC71450 (7Kg) 1400 washing machine, that has been making a really loud noise when spin drying (for around the last 6 months).

It always makes the noise, and the noise increases as the spin speed does. It doesn’t seem to be wobbling/vibrating. Other than the noise it works fine.

Can anyone help diagnose, or recommend next steps? Is it a changeable part? Do I need to get someone in? Is it time for a new machine (it’s 5 1/2 years old)?

Rather than trying to describe it, I’ve taken some recordings which should give you an idea of what it sounds like (if a dropbox sign-up box appears, just click the cross [x] to close it):

The noise (at 1200 rpm), the spin-down, and then spin-up: here

The noise at 1400 rpm: here

    Ouch!

Can I ask what exactly lead to that diagnosis?

Given that it only cost ยฃ230, it would seem uneconomical to repair (by design I guess).

My gut instinct given that it’s been this way for 6 months is to leave it until it dies, and then fork out for a new one. Is there any problem doing this? Also, if left, how is it likely to die (e.g. get noisier and noisier and then just stop spinning – which I can handle, or burst into flames – which I’d rather avoid!).

    Re: Really loud spinning noise

Like the majority of budget machines and even a few higher up the scale it has a totally sealed outer drum, nothing can be repaired only changed as a unit.

Always a possibility that something could snap off inside and puncture the drum which may then lead to a flood. It may be covered by a five parts warranty, you would only have to pay the labour charge to Indesit.

It hasnโ€™t got long with us by the sounds of it. ๐Ÿ™

Thanks for that. With my limited understanding, I understood it was a risk when I bought it, that more often than not when something goes wrong with these, it’s new machine time*.

I’m just curious as to what exactly has failed. Can you tell what it is, by just listening?

Unfortunately it’s over 5 years, so no chance on the warranty.

    * I considered a ยฃ650 Miele at the time I bought this for the 5 year warranty (which I realise would still be running) – but figured if I can average 3.3 years for each, I could get 3 cheap Indesits for the same price, which would (hopefully) last me for 10 years.

I realise the effect on landfill is pretty awful with this strategy ๐Ÿ™

    Re: Really loud spinning noise

bear in mind as the bearings fail they can begin to spray water out of the pulley. on most indesits the electronic get wet when this happens so may well be a fire risk

take the lid off and look for signs of water spray at the back of the case. its normally a rusty brown line spraying on the lid and down the sides inside

And the Miele would quite likely run for 15 to 20 years. ๐Ÿ˜‰

So is it the bearings that are going then?

And the advice is to replace the machine now?

    Re: Really loud spinning noise

Is it under five years old? If it is then the labour charge is just over ยฃ100 with all parts free, you canโ€™t buy a new machine for that price.

Youโ€™ve got to give credit to Indesit for producing such an effective product at such a low price point. And yet for it to have more than 5yrs lifespan is an incredible feat given its seemingly poor overall build quality. A plus for the sealed drum unit Iโ€™d say given that on their earlier models the drums exploded and brought untold misery to many as a result.

It was the sealed drums that exploded Martin. ๐Ÿ˜‰

That being so it’s even more remarkable the OP’s machine still rubbles on. Likely to explode any time soon then would you not think?

At least he won’t be as pee’d off as a customer I saw this afternoon, 2.5 year old higher spec Bosch with 3 phase motor, sealed drum with bearings gone. ๐Ÿ™
