ParticipantHi,
Can you help identify an intermittent problem on my Whirlpool AWZ 541 condenser drier, please?
-It stops mid-cycle.
-Doesn’t restart after powering off and back on. Both the ‘On’ and ‘Water -Container’ lights on the panel are lit. With the door open the ‘Water Container’ light is off. If the start button is held in with the door open, the ‘Water Container’ light looks half lit. But the Water Container is emptied after every use – I suspect this is a symptom but not the cause.
-After several futile attempts, the drier eventually restarts normally – and then stops mid-cycle a time or two later.Other background:
-I’ve replaced the element and thermostats several times over the years; we are now very careful to keep the lint filter and ductwork clean, and don’t open the door mid-cycle.
-When running, the drum has a few brief ‘false’ starts before rotating normally.
-The ticking sound (from the programmer, I think) is heard when the drum is not turning. To help decide whether to replace the drier (it’s given 10 year’s good service) I’d like to know if an expensive component is likely to be causing the problem, or if it’s something that I can easily fix (like a poor cable connection?)
The forum replies are a brilliant service to the community: thank you!

check the summp/well where the water is held, buy pump could be partially blocked causing intermittent problems or the sensor/switch is faulty, power off & give it a good clean 1st.

Hi Whitevanman,
You are spot on! I blew down the tube from the pump and also the overflow return and the drier restarted – but soon stopped again. I haven’t yet been able to find how to access the pump, sump and sensor to clean them but will do so shortly. Do you know if they are accessed from underneath, please? With many thanks, DAVSMI -
