ParticipantHi, I’m trying to repair my aunt’s LG WM-10130F washing machine that has a main motor fault. When you try to run the machine, the motor makes a godawful noise (almost like a someone trying to put nuts and bolts in a shredder !), and the drum turns in fits and starts. I took the back off and removed the belt and was expecting the motor to turn like it was full of shrapnel, but it spun smoothly with no noise at all.
Whatever the fault is, it doesn’t appear to be mechanical. I initially thought ‘brushes’ but I’ve never heard a motor with knackered brushes sound like that before. Then I discovered that I can’t find any brushes online for that model machine, but I could find stators and rotors. Not really knowing what these parts are, (I thought all motors had brushes – obviously not !) I did a bit of Googling and am now learning of induction motors for the first time !
I’m guessing that’s what’s in my aunt’s machine ?
What is the most likely failed part given the symptoms ? As I said, I have no experience of induction motors so I can’t even hazard a guess.
Any help gratefully received. Ta !

Can’t help with LG faults but was a little puzzled about someone who recently posted about testing a machine with earth disconnected, apparently ‘you knew what you where doing’ and yet you have never heard of induction motors, stators or rotors ❓ ❓

I DO know what I’m doing with regards to my own safety, which was clearly the point I was making regarding temporarily disconnecting the earth for diagnostic purposes in my dishwasher thread. The fact that induction motors are new to me doesn’t mean I’m an idiot who is about to electrocute himself.

Are you sure it’s the motor? Couldn’t it rather be the drum bearings making the noise?

Definitely the motor. The drum spins nicely and the jerky stop-start symptoms point to the motor getting power intermittently – which is what made me think of brushes. As induction motors are not something I’ve worked on before, I’m struggling to think what could be causing the noise, as, as far as I can see, they don’t have any contacting surfaces other than the bearings. Maybe it’s electrical noise – I don’t know… rapid arcing perhaps, oscillating ? I know don’t the failure modes of these types of motors.
The bottom line is that I don’t know if it is an induction motor yet as I haven’t removed it from the machine. I was asking here in case anyone knew, and also knew how they usually failed. I won’t be ordering any parts for it until I’ve stripped the motor though.

“The drum spins nicely and the jerky stop-start symptoms point to the motor getting power intermittently” there`s only 5 things it can be 1) the drum bearings are shot 2) the motor is shot, 3) the belt is at fault or 4) there`s something wrong else where the motor is being fed power badly. 5) motor terminal block wires 1) you discounted. 2) is a possibility though if the motor bearings are ok it`ll be doubtful it`ll be the motor 3) discount that leaves 4 which will be a capacitor fail on the pcboard which is far more likely than a zapped motor. Whip the motor off, have a bloody good look at it if you think it is fine it`ll most likely be the or a pcb supplying poor power to the motor. OR 5) motor wires

KeymasterRe: Induction motor ?
It’s a moot point probably as the motor and a bunch of other stuff is obsolete.

Yes your right KWatt. I`m confused here because I`ve just looked up on partmaster and it shows a brush motor as an alternative to the obsolete original. Back to Poster: is this a brush motor that you have or an unknown version with the same model number based on a serial number with a brushLESS induction motor??
