    Hi

We have a Smeg Opera A2-5 dual oven range (Large fan other, smaller Aux oven).
    Main oven stopped working.
Aux oven fine, gets hot, thermostat red light works fine.
Changed main oven thermostat as a start. Old thermostat looked to have had an issue as black casing was melted where the 2 brown cables connect to it.
New thermostat has made no difference.
    Oven will not heat.
Red thermostat light never comes on.
Clock unit looks to be completely dead
Main over light inside comes on when door open.
Fan seems to run when oven turned on and cold air is circulating and you can hear it running, but no heat at all.
tried bypassing thermal cut out on the back, still same.

    Any Ideas?

I think my next step will be to bypass the timer unit or similar to see if this is the cause, I’m reluctant to spend £225 on a new timer unit unless i can 100{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} guarantee this is the solution. I’ve read somewhere it may be the relay on the rear of the timer?

Any advice greatly appreciated. Oven is stood in middle of my garage with all access panels removed and access to a 30amp supply so i can easily access it and test different solutions / trial and error. Can also upload pics if needed.

    Thanks in advance

am assuming main oven is a fan oven. if yes you say a fan is running now which fan is it

is it the fan inside the oven at the back

    if yes check the element
if no clock is probably the most likely

Hi Dave, thanks for the reply.

    Main oven is fan yes.

The fan to the rear of the oven inst moving at all, the large turbine-like one with the element around it. The moving of cold air appears to the come from the cylinder cooling fan unit which is mounted above the two ovens to the rear.

    I hope this clarifies

yes ok I would bridge out the clock as that is most likely your problem

Ok great I will give that a try.

I attach 2 pics of the rear of the timer PCB, can you advise which cables I should try bridging?

I also attach a pic of the thermostat I removed for reference, with the melted connection.

Re: Smeg Opera A2-5 Main Oven and Clock Unit not working

    Hi Dave

So I tried the bypass and amazingly the functionality of the oven returned! Thermostat red light back on, fan spinning at the rear, oven getting hot, then after 1 min, it tripped my circuit board in the house.

    tried again, same.

The other thing to note was that the red thermostat light was constantly on, with both ovens turned off (almost like standby), but then when I turned the temp dial, it goes off (like when its at 12 oclock) but as soon as you get to 1oclock it comes on again, as it should until the temperature is reached.

Anything you think I could try next?

well you have an earth fault as I assume its tripping the RCD (with the test button) not an mcb which is a fuse

first stop is always element failure

Re: Smeg Opera A2-5 Main Oven and Clock Unit not working

    Thanks Dave. Yes RCD.

Ok, is there any way I can test the element or am i best just ordering a new one for completeness?

Is the display/time failure likely to be connected to this or an independent fault of its own, i.e if the element is replaced, will I be able to undo the relay bypass and get the display working again?

I read somewhere that the displays can temporarily fail if the power has tripped and you can ‘bring them back to life’ once the oven faults are repaired by pressing all 5 buttons?

Once again, thank you very much

to be able to test element you would need a multimeter set on high resistance scales and you looking for about 2 million ohms or above. bad news is sometimes this reading will fall as element gets hot so you may need to run it till it trips then quickly isolate the element and test it
    or replace it

Re: Smeg Opera A2-5 Main Oven and Clock Unit not working

    Thanks Dave.

I don’t have much experience testing so for the benefit of doubt i have bought a new genuine element for £20 on ebay. I will fit this and try again. I’m also changing the thermal cut-out whilst I’m at it for completeness.

Do you think the clock is a separate issue or do you think this will come back to life? can bypassing the relay on the clock in the way I have be a safe long-term fix?

bypassing the relay is a safe long term fix as long as it is done properly

also early elements have studs the later ones need 2 nuts and bolts to fit
