Anyone ever replaced an electronic halogen transformer on a hood with a standard wound one? I have a few older style ones lying around and needed to change an electronic one but was worried about overloading the main pcb. Voltages are marked identical….

depends how its switched. if its a relay on the board wont change things at all. if its triac switched then you are introducing wound components that the triac might not be protected for. As far as overloading is concerned its still the same wattage. One of the main advantages of the electronic ones is slow start. helps the lamps last longer as it stops surge switch on

good points Dave and along the lines I was thinking. this one also had variable brightness lighting assume by lowering the voltage to the transformer from the pcb = triac control at a guess.

Problem is with the electronic ones its difficult to tell if they have failed or not with a meter as there is no circuit when reading across the “primary”. As it happened on this one I needed to change both pcb’s in the end as the blown transformer had also taken out the main pcb. £300 bill to the customer just to get their lights working!

    talk about overkill

Why would you want to dim the lights over what you are cooking ?

£300 for a lamp assume they want to go ahead then lol

£1200 + hassle of fitting for a new hood then, yes, they did go ahead.
