I just need some advice please. We have had this Zanussi washer dryer for years and it has been amazing. It still works perfectly, but it is definitely looking a bit old. The bearings are going though, as it is getting extremely loud! I have accessed the back of the machine and am now faced with a large allen key in the middle of the bearing which appears to be up solid.

My question is simply this. A bearing set is about £30. Am I likely to have the skill or ability to change these bearings? I am quite a competent DIYer but as the machine is so old I am now thinking that it might be better to save the £30 and just put it towards a nice new washer dryer!

Does the whole drum need to come out to change the bearings?

    Thanks in advance.

whole drum needs to come out. That key on the pulley can be a pig to get out

Major job for the expert anyway but do’able for the avid DIYer. Tub out to split and remove the inner drum then hammer out the bearings. You’ll need a new tub gasket as well as the bearing kit by the way, ohh and Band Aids for your bloodied wounds.

Or, bite the bullet and buy a new machine. It’s what the wife would want 😉

Thank you so much for the advice. I am thinking a new one might be the right call! Will certainly keep the wife happier! I was looking at a nice Neff one – are they as reliable as any?!
PS Since smacking that allen key the bearings aren’t making as much noise!!
