The unit is located in an empty house with ambient temp around 5degC indoors, and is currently not working (except for the interior light). I also encountered the same problem last winter. During warmer conditions, say, above 10deg, the f/f works normally. Assuming a thermostat fault, I briefly wafted a hair dryer around the temp selector in the fridge section and also the outer casing hoping for a reaction, but there was none.

sounds mad but in these units the freezer is controlled by the fridge. As the unit is working the freezer cools first then moves onto the fridge. After the fridge gets cold enough the thermostat turns off. the unit then will not turn back on till the fridge gets warmer normally around 5 degrees. if it never gets warm enough then the unit wont turn on and the freezer will defrost

if its waiting till 10 degrees inside the fridge to turn on then changing the stat might well improve things a little but not a lot until you add heat to the environment

    Thanks for your thoughts.
Could I suggest another scenario? Householder goes away for a couple of weeks during a particularly cold spell with indoor temp around zero. Even if the thermostat is fully serviceable, the fridge won’t be coming on, and therefore a freezer defrost is guaranteed, albeit slowly. How mad is that? It seems that interior heating is necessary in this case for the f/f to work normally.

yes been that way for years with the older style stats. My sister moved to Huddersfield years ago and put her fridge freezer outside the house and found it defrosted and rang me to find out why

and if you go away and don’t leave heating on you don’t want to come back to burst pipes and around zero you are asking for it
