My ISE 10 washer is making a racket when it spins. Could it be the bearings? It doesn’t make any noise when washing normally, only when it spins up.

Are there any tests I can do to determine whether it is the bearings going?

    thanks

put your hand inside the drum and turn it by hand with your palm flat in the drum. if it has a rough feel then bearings have failed

there are only 2 main noises a machine can make on spin. suspension or drum bearings. if its suspension it wont make the noise if run with no clothes in it. Also suspension or loose concrete weight tends to be more of a bang bang noise but bearing is a more continuous noise unless the bearings have failed that bad the inner drum moves

    Thanks Dave

It runs quiet when empty but when it spins up to the full 1600 with a full load it makes an absolute racket.

Based on your post it sounds like suspension – is this something a DIY er can tackle on these ISE machines?

    thanks

    Re: ISE10 1606W bearings

Loose weights on ISE 10, doesn’t happen.

Suspension faults also very, very rare. I have only ever changed one single rear suspension leg due to a leak from above.

Foreign bodies, large coins etc inside the outer drum a possibility, you can easily remove one of the drum lifters to check for this and examine the heating element at the same time. I have had one heating element that was loose and the machine sounded like an automatic rifle on full spin.

Details of how to remove the drum lifters is in the user manual.

    Re: ISE10 1606W bearings

Thanks – I’ve spun it with back off and full load and as you said, suspension is fine. I’m guessing it must be the bearings (although I’m surprised as its only 6 years old and I thought they were supposed to be bombproof Volvo truck bearings) as the element is tight and nothing came out from the lifters.

Is bearing replacement on these machines best left to an engineer?

    cheers

Not the easiest bearing change for sure.

    Re: ISE10 1606W bearings – Video added

    Hi

I’ve added a video of the machine in action. I’d be grateful if any of you guys in the know could confirm whether you reckon it is a bearing problem

    Re: ISE10 1606W bearings

Something obviously wrong but difficult to say what it could be from that.

If you take the belt off and then spin the drum as fast as you can through the door it should be absolutely silent, no noise of any kind.
If you can hear anything at all with the belt off it would point to bearings.
Bearings themselves don’t fail initially, it is the water seal that fails allowing detergent and water into the bearings.

As Iadom says its difficult to say
but the drum was not bouncing wildly so I assume no load, and from the noise its got to be a drum problem of sorts

try spinning drum as above with no belt also see if the inner drum moves up and down. put you hand at the top of the inner drum and push upwards. what you looking for is movement of the inner drum inside the outer

    Re: ISE10 1606W bearings

Thanks for your help. I have removed the belt and spun by hand. It’s a bit noisy (not rumbling but definitely not silent) and i made a quick video of it here:

there is a tiny bit of play when pushing the drum as Dave suggested – probably a couple of mm.

    cheers

:tools: I’ll see if there’s a local repair guy who is willing to take it on.

    Thanks for all your help.

Just out of interest what did they quote for replacing the bearings?
