1 were the old brushes well worn

2 when you fitted the brushes did you make sure they are touching the armature as sometimes the brushes are tight in the holders till the last 2mm

E21 should reset normally even with the brushes not in

there are a few resets but the common one is

from off position turn prog dial to 6 o clock (wait 2 secs)
press and hold the spin speed button (wait 2 secs)
turn prog dial to 7 o clock (wait 2 secs)
now release the spin speed button (wait 2 secs)

now turn knob to off wait 5 secs and turn back on

if you rush things or go too slow it may not work. Also it does not always work first time

forget the soot its normal

try

Hold start button, turn control knob one turn ANTI CLOCKWISE then release start button.
