ParticipantHi – I have a Maytag side by side fridge freezer. (Model GC2228EEdB/18 FD8111 serial number 18478878ZZ). The drain outlet was blocked so we have cleared it today. We did manage to overflow the drain pan in the process when flushing through. We found a piece of plastic with plumbers putty fallen from the copper bulb above and a piece of putty in the tube – so think this may be what caused the blockage. Not had a blockage before and the appliance is 16 years old. We bought more plumbers putty and carefully rewrapped the bulbous thing. Now when we turn it on it is tripping the rcd. I’m hoping it is down to water somehow shorting something after all having been off for so long and that somehow will say when we turn it on in the morning it will be fine…
We have tried plugging it into a socket on a different circuit and it tripped that rcd too.
Also, water is also dripping out of the door – not sure why? Is it possible the inside of the door was ice filled? Or the seal somehow?

Just tried again before giving up for today and it stayed on for 51 seconds before tripping the rcd. Which is longer than it was earlier. I’m crossing fingers that in the morning all will be well…

you need to look where you think the water has gone. if its got inside any covers over electrical units then opening these covers and blowing cold air from a fan will help to dry it out. what you have to be careful about is every time you try it you may be causing carbon tracks to form which means you will need spares to fix it

Hi Dave, Thanks for your reply. I didn’t know about carbon tracks so will leave it alone. Given the food is wasted now anyway and we are away next week on holiday, we can even leave it until we get back. I will prop the doors open. I don’t really see how the water could have gone anywhere other than the floor, but maybe condensation could have formed when it was off and water dripped somewhere somehow.
Unfortunately, due to a kitchen design company that should have known better, the f/f is in a tightly sized carcass and is very difficult to move in or out, with an island unit built in front just far enough away from the cabinetry as the depth of the machine so we haven’t attempted to move it at all. If I were to have designed this kitchen I would have had the end panel removable to more easily access the rear of the machine but unfortunately it is a structural part of the very large cupboard above.

Ok. Back from holiday and it stayed on for 25 minutes before tripping the RCD.
We have visited a local repair/sales company (Bews in Stotfold, North Herts) who used to repair Maytag but no longer do so as it is so difficult to get hold of parts. Currys also say they are unable to repair Maytags, possibly for the same reason. The frustrating thing is that this machine was working perfectly until we had to turn it off to clear the drain outlet. With it having increased the time from 2 mins to 25 mins in two weeks in which it will stay on, does that suggest anything to anyone?
Bit scared of carbon tracks and fire risk in trying again.
Any thoughts?
Thanks, Michelle.

We’ve bitten the bullet and have arranged for a Maytag engineer to have a look.
