ParticipantI have an Electrolux EOU63102X double oven, a while back when we turned on the fan oven it caused the house RCD to trip and knock the electric off. I replaced the fan element and all was good. The old element was visibly broken (the insulation had ruptured over some of the element’s length). Now the oven has started tripping the RCD when turning on the grill in the bottom oven. I assumed the grill element had gone too, the oven is about 12 years old and the fan element had died a while back so it seemed reasonable. I bought a replacement and fitted it. However the RCD still trips when the grill is selected, this is the symbol with just a grill on it. But if I select the symbol with the grill and a line above it which I believe also turns on the element at the top of the oven with the grill, then the grill heats up just fine! When I realised this I also noted I could not see any insulation damage on the grill element I removed. I suspect there is nothing wrong with the element I removed, and perhaps it is the oven selector switch that is shorting something on the grill setting? Am I barking up the wrong tree? How might I check if this is the case? Thanks for your help, apologies for the long post …

Your barking up the wrong tree
It more than likely is an element faulty
Assume but have not checked that your grill can also be used as an oven
Does it trip when you select thisDave

Thanks for the replay Dave. I take it an issue with the selector switches is unusal then!
Hmm there is something odd though. The old element measures similarly as the new element in terms of element resistance, and it has no visible faults in the insulation. I suppose I can’t do a proper insulation test so it could be it does have a fault that is revealed at operating voltages.
Anyway, I have re-tested the oven by setting the thermostat up full then going through each of the selector switch settings, it now, from cold at least, does not trip at all, and the grill is definitely working. So I suppose I am all fixed, but I can’t help feeling that perhaps last time I tested it the oven was warm, I will try testing at temperature and see what I find. Is it possible that when heated up and expanded something is shorting that is fine when cold?!!?

try disconnecting the element and make wire safe. then switch on
if it trip still it cant be the element
it would be very unusual for the selector switch to have an earth fault. I am not saying it cannot happen but I cannot remember seeing one and I have been at this over 40 years
had one that drove me nuts 6 months ago and it turned out to be the fan motor. never seen that before either so strange things do happen
