Hello all. I had an Indesit drier that was affected by the fire recall issue. Apart from that, it was OK. Unfortunately I elected to buy a new Hotpoint drier at the discounted offer price. It is garbage and I think I need to replace it.

Technology moves on and I am tempted by a heat pump drier. I am OK with the extended drying times. I see a Miele TCE520 for just under a thousand pounds. A lot of money for a drier but as the technology is fairly new, it might be worth paying extra. The Miele has an A+++ energy rating.

However, it could take a very long time for the energy efficiency to pay for itself.

Question really is then, do I pay a premium for the Miele? Or do I buy a less expensive heat pump model, take a risk on reliability? Or forget it and buy a new condenser drier?

PS – Bosch have some less expensive heat pump models but I get the feeling here that Bosch driers aren’t what they used to be.

    Thanks.

    Re: Replacement tumble drier?

Some reading on heat pump dryers HERE

Vented is always better than condenser dryers but if it has to be I have found the Zanussi ones to be OK.

    Re: Replacement tumble drier?

Thanks very much. Having now read around this topic, I am pretty much of the opinion it’s best to avoid either condensing or heat pump driers for now. The Hotpoint condenser we have is complete rubbish. Much worse than the vented Indesit it replaced. More heat enters the room from the Hotpoint than is used in the drier to dry the contents, it seems.

Thinking about it, the very first/cheapest/simplest tumble drier I bought was a vented Philips device with a simple warm/hot switch and a mechanical timer knob. I had it over ten years with no problems.

So, my question now is – What is the best/most reliable vented drier out there, preferably one with simple controls rather than a complicated electronic control panel? I already have an outside vent installed so it’s no problem to buy another vented one.

    Thanks.

    Re: Replacement tumble drier?

the factory that probably produced your old Philips drier still exists and the design has not changed a lot. now called white knight (crosslee) in Halifax. They are one of the cheapest dryers on the market and fairly reliable and cheap to repair

    Re: Replacement tumble drier?

Amazing, thanks Dave. Funnily enough, I was mulling over the idea that they make a gas fired drier and seeing as there is a gas point within about 75cm of where the drier goes, that would be a way to reduce my energy costs without the complications of a heat pump drier!

    Thanks again.

    Re: Replacement tumble drier?

Thanks for the help folks. After mulling over the replacement drier it was a toss up between the White Knight 7kg drier in various model numbers or the Indesit IDV75. The drier we had before the Hotpoint condenser was a simple Indesit and we only got the Hotpoint because it was offered in lieu of the fire scare recall. So, what made us decide in the end for another Indesit is that if you register it on line you presently get a ten year parts warranty. So, that’s what we have ordered. Buying the Hotpoint condenser drier was a big mistake. Good advice here to avoid them.

    Thanks again.

    Re: Replacement tumble drier?

Sadly you have got it the wrong way round, the Indesit dryer was made by Hotpoint as is the new one, or it may now even be a rebadged Whirlpool. The Indesit Company took over Hotpoint many years ago and Whirlpool bought the whole lot a couple of years ago.

Edit, just checked that model number is based on the long standing Hotpoint design.

    Re: Replacement tumble drier?

Well the Indesit IDV75 is a pretty basic machine without doubt. Hopefully you bought it via John Lewis for that vital 2 yr warranty? Oh wait a minute, no, you bought it elsewhere as you have Indesit’s own 10 yr parts guarantee. Darn! If it goes wrong in 13 months time that’s gonna cost you £119 to get it fixed. 😯

Fingers crossed that your good luck will hold out though. 😉

    Re: Replacement tumble drier?

Thanks for the feed back guys.

Just a couple of comments to summarise.

I would have bought the basic White Knight 7kg machine. But discussing with Mrs Bloggs, we decided to go for the Indesit. In fact, if it wasn’t for the fire recall scare, we’d still have the Indesit we had before the Hotpoint rubbish. We were perfectly happy with the simple vented Indesit we had, it was a mistake getting the Hotpoint condenser. We’ll not make that mistake again.

John Lewis? Well, we have had the majority of our appliances from them for many years. But, let’s say our recent experience is nothing like as positive as it has been in the past. JL are not the lowest price for the Indesit drier, I’ll have to ask Mrs B if JL price matched or not and where she ordered it from.

Lastly, the new machine is so simple, so cheap that if it were to break if I can’t fix it myself and it’s a couple of years old, I’ll give it away and get another.

    Cheers.

Fair play to you Fred, I hope you get plenty of trouble free usage out of your new Indesit. 😀
