ParticipantHello – new to this forum, hope you can help?! 😕
We have a Smeg FAB28 fridge (model no. S28 STRP/1) that recently does not seem to get below 8oC no matter what setting the thermostat is on. In fact the higher the setting the warmer it seems to get?!! I’ve cleaned behind it and checked the compressor is still working (it whirrs into life every now and again at least!). The ice compartment does ice up a lot too – the seal doesn’t quiet seem up to the job.
Its in our kitchen, that can get quiet warm (pesky Aga), but has always worked before – its 5yrs old now.
Is there anything I can check before having to call someone in to take a look?
Many thanks

When you were behind it did the compressor feel very hot ?

KeymasterI’m thinking what Dave is, it sounds like a compressor failure at the age of it and, given that you can hear it running on and off, I’d assume that the thermostat was most likely okay. So yeah, probably the compressor, which is no tthe news you wanted to hear.
The only way to be 100{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} sure is to get an engineer in to take a look for you but if we’re correct then you are looking at about a £200 bill to put it right. 🙁

Thanks for your replies.
Dave – yes, the compressor (black ‘box’ thing?) does appear hot – a little too hot to keep your hand on it. Is this bad news? 🙁 From what kwatt has just posted, am I looking at a big bill to repair it? Oh dear, not the news I’d hoped for.
Could you recommend any engineers around the Macclesfield / South Manchester area (SK postcode)? Just it time for my daughter’s 1st birthday party!! What good timing…. 🙁 🙄

Hi, I’m also new to this but have exactly the same problem 12 months later. Can’t get the fridge cold. Door seal isn’t brilliant but have cobbled a repair but problem is more serious. What was the outcome of this? Was it the compressor or the thermostat? And, can it be fixed without the help of an engineer if you can get the part?
Thanks, J
