ParticipantHi all
Our current vacuum cleaner’s given up the ghost after only a few years so we’re thinking of spending a bit more on the replacement to get a more robust cleaner. Previously we had a corded cleaner with a flexible hose that we could use for the house and – with a suitable power extension lead and cleaning head – the car. We can’t always park by the house so a cordless cleaner would be ideal, and we’re looking at Dysons.
I’m a bit confused as to why the handheld and uprights are two entirely separate ranges, or perhaps more precisely why the uprights can’t come with a flexible hose tool to make them useful for the car. I understand that dyson try to optimise everything for intended uses, but I’d be happy with limited car functionality rather than have to buy two separate cleaners.
Do Dyson sell such a cleaner? We’re really after some sort of blend of the V6 car and boat and the standard V6 upright, but I can’t find anything. Alternatively, is it possible to buy a separate upright extension and use with the V6 car and boat (or a flexi hose for any of the uprights)? I can’t find much on the dyson website about this.
Any advice gratefully received. Apols if covered in other threads, I had a quick search and didn’t find anything – links to threads I may have missed would also be appreciated.
Cheers

ParticipantApologies, by ‘upright’ I meant ‘stick’. The actual devices themselves look identical to the handheld, just with differing attachments.

ModeratorFor my money I am not a great fan of Dyson nor of cordless cleaners.
despite the hype it is not possible to get the same power from a cordless cleaner which is always a compromise between power and battery life
If you want a cylinder cleaner I would recommend a Numatic. You will have seen them almost everywhere with the eyes and a smiling faceif you want an upright I Have a Sebo X4 brilliant cleaner
I can see your point with the car but don’t make the mistake of buying a cleaner based on this requirement. Bear in mind that if you cant get the car close enough it does not cost a lot to go to a local garage and use one of their vacs
As you can imagine this is just my personal opinion

ParticipantI have a Dyson V6 which we use around the house, specifically for vacuuming the solid floors using the motorised head. The crevice tool for the nooks & cannies. For car vacuuming it is a bit of a mare to be honest, not enough suction power, can’t clean the mats properly. But THE most frustrating thing about the V6 is the ruddy battery, it suddenly dies half way doing the task. No slip off slide in new battery, has to sit on the charger for eternity….rubbish design (are you listening James?).
So, for my car it’s the Kárcher wet and dry cyclinder vac, sucks the muck as easy as f*** (great one line advertising slogan eh?)
Good luck deciding

ParticipantTa for advice, much appreciated.
Sounds like we might be out of luck for a combined house and car vacuum cleaner, so might pony up for one of each.
I’m not sure the cheapy cordless will be much cop in terms of battery life, so I’ll check out possibility of running a mains lead out of flat window as it’ll give more options at more sensible prices (we’ve recently moved to a flat as we moved up north for work, but hopefully will be in a house with a drive soon). If that’s not a goer, the dyson car and boat is discontinued and so on sale, and comes with a car charger which might mitigate some of the issues.
I’ve used the petrol station car vacuums a few times, but found them a mixed bag with some barely managing to raise any sort of vacuum – I think some are looked after more than others. I’ll see if I can find a decent one in the area, which would help make this all moot!

ModeratorI would go for one of the Sebo X series every time for the cleaner around the house. For the car or any decorating needs I would buy a cheap bagless cylinder cleaner. There are plenty on the market around the forty pound mark.

ModeratorI have an extension suction hose to use my SEBO X4 for the car, works perfectly.
Do have a £99 Numatic, a JAMES of course as back up.:)
