Hi everyone, hope you can help me 🙂

My Zanussi machine is about 4-5 years old now, and has started to leave white smears on the clothes. It seems to do it whether I put lots of clothes in or very few. We live in a very hard water area (Norfolk).
I use Persil powder, Comfort fabric conditioner, and I have been using Calgon tablets but only for the last month or two. I udo not put loads of the powder in.
I have cleared out the filter at the bottom of the front. What else can/should I do, or do I need to call someone out? Or is the machine a goner 🙁
It is driving me mad, have to keep re-washing everything!!
    Please help!!

    Cheers,
    Emma

    Emma,

I certainly appears that your problem is associated with limescale build-
up. A long hot ‘service wash’ may help, by that I mean put your machine on a 60 degree cycle with no clothes in it, half the normal amount of detergent and let it run through a wash cycle. Do that every so often to flush it through does help in these cases.

Also avoid ‘quick-washes’ as often they do not fully rinse the detergent from the machine. Constant mixed fabrics cool washes is the main culprit for rapid build-up of limescale and detergent debris getting between the inner and outer drum lining.

Calgon will help break this down significantly after a short while but can often produce adverse effects by loosening great lumps of limescale into the wash drum and onto the clothes before eventually breaking up and getting caught in the drain filter! The latter effect may well be what you are experiencing???

    Hello Martin,
    Thanks for your reply.
I will put my machine on a hot service wash now and see what happens.
I very rarely use a ‘quick wash’, only if I need something really quickly, probably only used it about 10 times since I bought the machine. Most times I use the washing machine on D which I think is 40 degrees, should I use a hotter one sometimes then? I occasionally use a delicates program but rarely.
So should I not use Calgon at all, or every so often, or what would you suggest?
Is the drain filter something I can clean myself? Where would I find it? I was finding fairly big lumps of limescale stuff in the filter thing at the front which is why I got the Calgon.
Is it best to use the calgon all the time if you get a new machine, presumably the limescale doesn’t get to build up then?
Sorry about all the questions 🙂 Just a bit confused by it all now 😯

    Cheers,
    Emma

Watch the powder doseage as well Emma and make sure you’re not using too much.

Also, if you overload the machine you can also get detergent residues being left, there should always be room for the clothing to “swirl” around.

Yep, that’s the filter. Calgon is fine and really will cure most of your problem here BUT it will get worse before it gets better (the crud in the drain filter I mean 😉 )

A few service washes will help (once a month at first – minimum)

Thanks kwatt, I always try not to overload the machine and I use as little powder as poss, but the streaks are there even if the machine is only half full, which is what confused me 🙂

Martin, thanks again, have done the service wash and found a lot of gunk around the seal and sort of under the drum. Will this go if I keep doing the service washes? And should I use Calgon on every wash including the service washes?

Many thanks again, you guys are great 😀
