ParticipantHi everyone !
My old Moffat 600’s lower element was completely burned out and not working. I ordered a new one, and just changed it ( I made sure I took a picture of the wiring before).
Having put the oven back in its place, I turned it on ( lower element only) set on 50 degrees to see if it worked: the oven gets hot ! However, I then turned it off, and the thermostat light is still on. It stays on even when the oven is off, but turns off if I turn any of the knobs ( either the temperature one or the cooking mode one)….
Is it possible to put an element the wrong way ? Upside down I mean, so the wires are connected to the wrong end of the element ?
What could cause the light to stay on after I’ve turned off the oven ?Thanks for your help !

Moderatornot sue what it is but
I assume you have an RCD safety trip on you fuse board so if you mixed up the earth wire on the element the trip would blow. the other 2 wires don’t matter which way round they are connected. if you want to prove its not the element, Disconnect it, insulate the wires and turn cooker back on. if it still lights it cant be the element

ParticipantHi Dave,
thanks for your answer !The lower element broke a while ago (before I moved in to the flat, I only realised after a couple of weeks living there that it wasn’t working !), so I changed it but didn’t unplug the earth wire: I simply unplugged the two wires connected to the element and changed it ( after having disconnect the oven from any power source).
Put the new element on, plugged the two wires back, and as soon as I plugged the oven back to the power, the thermostat light turns on… even if I don’t touch anything ! It doesn’t seem to be heating if I don’t touch anything, hence why I’m surprised to see that light on !December 11, 2018 at 10:26 pm #459507electrofix
Moderatoris the light lit fully or just partially. ie if you turn the oven on does it get brighter?
neon light will light on next to nothing. An example of the is the neon screw driver where the current to light it goes through your body. Its so small you cant feel it
it only takes a small leakage of power to ignite these lampsDave

ParticipantHere is the weird bit… If I plug the oven to a power socket, the thermostat light turns on straight away. Then, if I turn the function knob ( to any function, grill, bottom element only, etc.) the light turns off, but the light inside the oven turns on. If I turn the temperature know instead, the light turns off as well… It turns back on only when I bring the knobs back to their initial position (no function or temperature), or if both knobs are turned ( ie, grill only set to 50 degrees).
So:
Both knobs set to zero/no function = light on constantly
One knob turned = light off
Both knobs turned = light back on.December 12, 2018 at 12:14 am #459509electrofix
Moderatorsounds like one of the switches has a bit of leakage. it only has to leak 0.003 Amps to light the lamp. could be 2 cables with a bit of leakage too close. could be a switch with a bit of leakage
as soon as you move the switch you create a hard connection and at that short out and dissipate the leakage
when you turn the oven on the light come on as normal
