Dear All … we have a 1996 Hoover Classica as above. The bearing is giving out – Hoover can’t supply the bearing parts any longer (they did look it up, it was in a paper book, obsolesced 1996) and the repair expert from our local emporium says he can’t either, and it’s an entire drum assembly anyway, it would cost nearly as much as a new machine.

The expanded diagram we’ve had for years which has served us well shows separate parts, and Hoover gave us two parts numbers, but I admit we were both floundering a bit to be certain we were looking at the right parts.

Can anyone advise whether this is a closed drum assembly or a set of replaceable parts? And if the latter, any pointers to where we might find the ball bearings or ball bearing assembly of the right size?

The machine is still running, but making a terrible noise and not running true. The view is that not long now and it will wear through something inmportant and conk out.

    Many thanks for any information.

A proper model number might help if you have it. 😉

There is one bearing kit in the site shop that fits a lot of old Hoover machines.

Thank you for that. I will draw that to Mr Banana’s attention. (He is now wondering if it’s the right size, but we’ve been told that a lot of the sizes are quite widespread across models.)

The full model info we have is Serial number AC17860370016 and type number AC 178 301. (Excuse the bold, I can’t get rid of it on the paste.)

Do I deduce this then IS a job that can be done at home without replacing the entire drum assembly?

    Many thanks.

That model would certainly have a drum that can be opened to replace the bearings. There is however a good chance that the drum shaft may well have been damaged as well if it has been noisy for some time. If you do want to try and repair it then the best thing to do would be to stop using it ASAP and strip it down to see exactly what state it is in or if you can even get the bearings out. You should do that before ordering any parts.
