Hi.
The rear bearing on my Hotpoint WM52 motor has given up the ghost. I’ve stripped the motor and got the armature out with the two bearings on it. Removing the rear one is easy enough, but seeing as I’m in here I may as well replace the front one too as I don’t think it’s going to last too much longer. My question is….. how the hell is the v-belt ribbed pulley attached to the motor shaft ? I’ve tried using a bearing puller and heating it with a torch – nothing – won’t budge. Then I noticed two small flats on the very end of the pulley and wondered if it was threaded onto the shaft. There’s no way I was going to get enough force on those tiny 2mm wide flats to unscrew the pulley so I filed two big buggers on the opposite side – but despite holding the armature in a vice and giving the spanner on the pulley a good hard tap with a lump hammer (I didn’t want to go mad as I didn’t want to grip the armature too tight in the vice – it wouldn’t budge. I tried both ways too, in case it was a left hand thread.
Does anyone know how these little pulleys are attached to the shaft please ?

you don’t is the short answer its put on with a 12 ton press
you can lubricate it to make it better. hold armature with pulley upwards. get some light oil like 3 in one. clean the top of the bearing. put one or 2 drips towards the middle of the bearing where the shield revolves. then revolve the bearing by hand to help it work its way in. if the bearing is noisy you should hear it go quiet as it gets in there.
its important no to overdo it as you don’t want oil flying everywhere and part of the idea is to help the grease to soften not to rinse it out

Well, I got it off! I watched a video on YouTube where someone was doing something similar with a Whirlpool motor. Once I saw that I knew it was pressed on. I used a larger set of bearing pullers (that I had to grind the tips on to get them to fit), a drop of machine oil, some welly on the puller and it slid off nicely!
I got the bearings out shortly after!
