    Hi all,
So I have a couple of fridge freezers in our garage which for the first time, started to defrost when the temperature dropped below 0 a couple of years ago.
I didn’t know at the time they stopped working during cold spells, so that was a not so nice surprise!
Short of buying two Beko fridge freezers which work during cold spells, I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations on what to do about it? Obviously the solution is to heat the garage, but, it’s drafty/cold and I was hoping a simple frost guard heater (400 watt variety) would be sufficient?
We DO have a storage heater in the garage, but by the time it’s expelled all it’s heat during the day, it’s freezing at night, so isn’t of much use.
I was looking at those long tubular heaters or a frost watcher?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

the reason the freezer defrost is because the freezer relies on the fridge for temperature regulation. If you get a freezer only you wont have that problem

the way the system works is a follows. you switch the unit on and the gas goes to the freezer first. until the freezer is down to a low temp then the fridge will not cool down. once the freezer get cold enough there enough unused gas to carry on and cool the fridge which continues to cool down to the set temp. This is where your problem sets in. The thermostat in the fridge is set to turn on again at +2 degrees. if the temp in your garage is below this then it will never switch on and will defrost. In fact the temp has to be considerably above this and they factor in that normally the fridge door will be opened every now and then to warm things up

unless you create a warm room in your garage with studding and plasterboard plus insulation then it wont ever be satisfactory

Thanks Dave, yea I figured as much
I think I’m going to have to sell them both and get two Beko replacements, it might work out cheaper than overhauling an entire garage.
