Hi
I have a Smeg FQ60XP american fridge/freezer which is few weeks over 1 year old and its not cooling any more. I called a local engineer since Smeg said its out of warranty and he said I have to replace the compressor. Seemed a bit strange to me cuz he had to cut a pipe in order to see where is the problem. Is this how u usually test it. The lights are on and the ventilator its working. Also he asked for £550 to fix it. I just want to make sure we pay the right amount to the right guy. Any advice would be much appreciated. I cant find the right compressor on the internet either, so can anyone point me in the right direction.
Thanks
Alex
It is possible that it is the compressor but it does seem a bit early for that to fail and it may well be worth calling Smeg and asking them nicely if this is acceptable given the young age and a compressor you’d not expect to fail until a good few years down the track.
Be nice and see if they will pick up the tab or a part of it and let us know how you get on with that before you go any further.
Update: called Smeg again today and it seems I have 2 years warranty. Last week they said 1 year 🙂 an engineer will come in few day. The problem is that the previous guy that had a look cut a pipe from the compressor. Do you think my warranty is void now? I didnt mention this over the phone.
Thanks
Alex
