ParticipantI have a Bosch Exxcel WAQ283S0GB washing machine which stopped working – the drum wouldn’t spin.
I had a look at the brushes and they were worn down to about 5-10mm each. I ordered a set of these brushes which are generic ones rather than the official Bosch ones – largely because these were the only ones I could next day: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B008FLOAGQ
I’ve now fitted them and the drum now spins but it’s pretty noisy. The noise is definitely coming from where the brushes make contact with the motor – I could hear it when turning the motor by hand only when the brushes were inserted. I have checked both brushes are in the right way round.
I wondered if this is normal with new brushes and they need to wear down to the correct angle to make a good contact. I’ve done a couple spin cycles to see if it improves but it’s still noisy.
So, I’m wondering, is this normal and if I leave it it will get better? Or should I spend the £30 on the official Bosch brushes? Or might the problem be with the motor itself?
Any thoughts much appreciated.
Thanks
Pete

Moderatordid you fit the brushes the correct way round
the brushes are shaped to meet the armature if you turn them over they wont sit properlyleft correct right wrong

Moderatorone of the problems with the cheap brushes is the angle is slightly wrong
what I would do is take them out again and look at the brush head. you will see its shiny where it meets the armature. just find some emery and take off the high spot and put them back
they will be noisier than the old ones till they bed in. for the first 10 washes lower the spin speed to 800 and do not fill full of towels. we need to keep the load down while they settle in. after 10 washes you can raise speed to 1000 for the next 10 and so on

ParticipantOR. the commutator has a raised / damaged segment which would give you a low to definite clicking noise and usually green and blue flashing sparks ( depending upon how bad is bad! ) the latter you can possibly get when everything is ” ok “.it is just that the new brushes, as already mentioned, have not been run in yet so could swing either way. If the former or latter this could take out the motor and also the pcboard so beware.

ParticipantThanks both. After a week’s worth of running, the noise from the brushes has settled down and seems fine.
There is however another issue I need to tackle. At some points – I think it’s when it’s draining – it makes a horrible gravelly noise.
You can hear it at the start of this video where I set it to drain: https://photos.app.goo.gl/2agpta668oEiQqVc9Any suggestions as to what this noise might be and how I can go about fixing it?
Thanks
Pete
