Hi,
I’m having to manually de-ice the fridge monthly because it doesn’t appear to be defrosting itself anymore (the rear fan begins to catch on ice and makes a loud noice eventually).
So far I’ve performed a continuity check on:
- The heating element – it read 381
- The defrost sensor read 14Kohms initially, reducing to 4kohms after my hand warmed it up. The sensor is also placed top left which I think is where an after market de-ice modification kit says to place the sensor to avoid ice up on this type of fridge.
I presume from the results of these tests suggest each is working OK ? Are there any other tests I can do myself ? I’m drawing a bit of a blank and suspect it is either the bi-metal switch (I hear they rarely fail) or the main control board.
Any help is appreciated please.
Defrost it fully and start it up again, dry out any moisture to the rear cover and hope it works would be my advice.
The kits you’re looking at I think are for older models, not this one.
As after that, it’s likely to be the evap cover, this one:

Thanks – I’ll give the full defrost a go. The evap cover has been off so many times that parts of the seal (especially underneath) have broken away. I’ll let you know how things go.
I’ve been slow at getting around to defrosting the fridge because it meant emptying the thing. Defrosting it tonight.
Defrosting the fridge didn’t work permanently and the ice has returned a few more times. I’ll try a new evap cover as you’ve suggested.
Fitted the replacement evap cover (ordered from here). There is ice forming again quickly in the same places. I can see a gap either side towards the top of the evap cover of about 10mm, but otherwise it looks to be fitted in place OK.
Are there any other suggestions ? I can see water on the floor from time to time suggesting the defrost cycle and heating element are melting some ice towards the bottom of the refrigeration coil.
Update: although ice was forming on the top left corner of the evap corner, this I’m told is normal. There is no longer any ice build up behind the cover so it worked thank you 🙂 I tested the heating element by putting the fridge into RD mode and splashing some warm water over the element which hissed away so that’s fine. Finally I swapped out the sensor in case it was out of range (cheap and easy to do). Pretty certain the issue is solved so thanks.
