ParticipantHello, I am having some troubles with my AEG oven on the fan setting which trips the oven rcd or the main rcd
I replaced the element as the most likely cause. However, after working for a few uses it is now tripping again. My wife resorts that once it has tripped today it then works also trip on regular oven mode.
Took the oven out for a look at the wiring. Hob is also wired from the oven, not sure if that is normal? There is green copper corrosion to the live that leads to the hob and the insulating tape is melted. Doesn’t look too clever but I thought maybe a separate fault, because why would that only trip when the fan is on?
Tested all the elements, all seem ok. Disconnected the fan, still trips. Disconnected the fan element, no trip. Tested the temperature sensor, reads about 580ohm at room temp and rises with temperature. Although I read it should be closer to 1000ohm at room temp?
Could replace the element again or even fit the old one for a test run.

Moderatorfirst where did you get the element from. there are a lot of useless chinese elements about

ParticipantHow can I test if it’s the element? It tests ok cold (continuity and similar resistance to the other elements). The old element was the original. I’m loathe to throw more elements at it before properly understanding the problem. It is a cheap element.
The old element does not have continuity and didn’t give a resistance reading so I think it is broken or shorted inside, although I can’t detect a short to the casing with my multimeter.

Moderatorfrom what you said you can run the oven and it trip and then no matter what seeting you put it on it trips
try this
remove oven from housing and place it on something it can be operated on. I use a b&d workmate. not sure if the back can be left off while your unit is in use but take necessary precautions with live components and switch off before touchingturn oven on and get to trip. then turn off, discnnect and make safe the 2 wires feeding the fan element, then turn back on and try all settings to see if it trips

ParticipantOk, more strangeness. We can now run the fan oven without it tripping but when we turn the oven off (using the selector switch) the internal fan stops but the fan element runs red hot until we switch it off at the wall.

Moderatorthats not that odd. There is a relay on the circuit board that controls this element. it has welded closed

ParticipantTrue. Is it easilylly identifiable and replaceable?
April 11, 2020 at 12:55 pm #467523electrofix
Moderatorshould be. follow the wire from the element to the board
since there are lots of these units with the same model the one i looked up shows the possible problem relay labelled SP20. to check you should find it is short circuit when tested with a multimeter

ParticipantIt doesn’t seem to be shorted out -i should see connectivity between the two pins feeding that element, right?
April 11, 2020 at 3:44 pm #467525electrofix
Moderatorno if you had connectivity between the element connections too low then thats a short it will go bang
you have to find the relay and measure across the contacts

ParticipantI have found the relay but I was measuring it the wrong way.
It’s a Schrack PBH34012 relay, only 93p each if you order 1050 🙂

That relay has sorted it out. Thank you very much Dave.
