ParticipantHi, I need to buy a washing machine for my family of 6 and I need some help.
My old Bosch Maxxx 6 gave me more than 15 years of service so i’m looking for something reliable. My main problem is, when I look at the Bosch and Siemens models (I think it’s the same company? Please tell me if one is generally less reliable than another) I don’t understand the price difference between models. For exemple with this seller has so many models available at the same price point 400-600€.
What should I look for apart from load size, rpms for spin drying (i think that’s the word) and energy consumption? I’m not looking for fancy features or anything like that. Should I prefer the most recent models?
thank you 🙂

ModeratorYou should look at Miele if you want something as reliable as your old Bosch, BSH appliances are not what they used to be sadly.

Hi iadom thank you for the advice, of course i’ve heard plenty of great things about Miele but my budget is more along the lines of 550€ I’m sure it wont be as reliable as 10 years ago, but I need to replace it and that’s what I managed to save 🙂

Moderatorwhat you have to look at is historic cost. How many weeks wages did it take to buy the Bosch 15 years ago. Then to get similar quality you need to spend the same number of weeks wages now.
problem is you just remember a figure normally so manufacturers have made machines cheaper over the years but quality has sufferedwith your link i would look at the WAN range. they dont seem to be too bad but i cant promise obviously

ParticipantThank you Dave, what does the WAN range indicates does it have something more than the WUQ or WAB? Is there any place I can read more about this naming system or it’s more from personal experience?
Also because you seem knowledgeable on this, is there any brand you would recommend at this price point that has as good
reliability? I’m not asking for a specific model of course more like a brand recommendation.Thank you
edit:
When comparing models at this price point on the Bosch website they all seem to have slight differences in the programs available, I don’t understand why, do people really have such different needs for washing machines? The one on the far right seems to be the most “expensive” one at a starting price of 800€ it has a bigger load capacity but lacks some programs. Not sure what to think of this.

Moderatorthe main reason i like this machine is it follows on from the WAE range that was made in the same factory as far as i know. A lot of machines these days are using a sealed drum and bosch is no exception. The problem is the sealed units dont seem to have the same reliabilty as the traditional units that can be taken apart. Last time i checked ( you can check on the Bosch website parts section) the WAN series still has a split drum.
miele is top of the tree. It may be a more expensive unit but 15 year old Miele’s are common. You could also look at Smeg. Smeg makes the washer drier units for Bosch who rebadge them. Samsung i would not touch as parts can be a nightmare and the same goes for any oddball makes
you have to think of 2 things, Reliability and spares availability. There is no point have a machine that takes weeks to get a part to fix it or one where access to parts information is scarse
hope it helps

ParticipantHi Dave! On your recommendation I ended up getting the Bosch EX WAN28150FF at 430€ I looked at the schematics on the spare parts site and it looks like it’s not a sealed drum. I’m sure it wont be as reliable as my old Maxxx top loader but the change was long overdue 🙂
Thank you for taking the time to help.

ParticipantYou should think about getting the old one repaired Michael.
The old ones last longer, better for the environment etc.
What wrong with the old one?

I’m kind of ashamed to say i’ve let it get worse over the years like an old toyota you want to get rid of, I could honestly have fixed it but I did’t get to it. It used to leak a little bit from the door every time during the spin drying and it has gotten so bad the front of the machine and the door is really rusty 🙁
Last week the lcd stopped working and sometimes it just wont start. It’s also a needed upgrade because we need a bigger capacity. But you are absolutely right and I should have fixed it!
