When the main [fan] oven lamp blew on switching on, repeatedly, tripping the fuse each time, then, once, the oven itself didn’t turn on, I isolated and withdrew the oven, expecting to find burnt cables or something. All looked clean and well, with no smells [well, maybe curry, a bit.] Searched Youtube for likely problems and learnt that the controller tends to fail as it has to switch 2.3kw through its contacts, unlike the upper oven, where function switch and element switch are separate.
all the videos I can find make replacing the controller a doddle: pull the stat off the back, pull off the front knob to reveal 2 screws, undo them and swap in the new item. Well, is my oven the only one without screws holding the controller? I hope not. Is it held in place by magic? I hope not. Can someone please indicate to me how the controller is held in place and, better still, how to get it off and fit a new one? If so I shall be eternally grateful, and owe you a curry of your choice.

since the board cant trip anything we have to find out what and why before we start on expensive parts

Noticed the lamp in the fan oven not working. Changed it: still out, but bulb tested good. Then after a few uses of oven, it flashed when turning on, and tripped rcd. Bulb not blown though. Has never lit since. Lodger then informed me that twice on previous week the fan oven wouldn’t work, but it’s been ok since, just no light. At that, he turned oven on. No light but turning the oven on tripped the RCD for the second time in, say 5 uses. On the controller the lamp microswitch is a gnat’s whisker away from the main element one, as far as I can trace the wiring, which is apparently the first one to distort through overheating. Once I get it off any damage will be visible, but at present the business side of it faces downwards against the deck.

It looks like it: six pairs connectors. Tells its own story in that the site doesn’t list the upper oven selector – which is truly only a function selector, not heat and function, so would rarely cause problems. It’s just a case of how to get it off though. On the parts diagram is 0231: ‘support’, which is fixed to the top panel somehow, and the selector may be screwed to that. I cannot see any visible means of support. It may even be a tabbed press-fit, in which case I’d best order another as well, I always manage to break one too many tabs. Hopefully someone has tackled this job before.
difficult to tell whats holding that. Switches have screws at the front,thats standard but how that support (as they call it ) comes off i dont know bit its got to be sturdy so you may not break it as easily as you think

OK, got the main control switch off [only half-broke the fixing – it click-fits into a collar around the hole in the front plate]. Examined switch – no sign of wear or overheating. Reassembled. Oven still works as normal, but replacing the lamp bulb it blows on switching lamp on and trips rcd. Suspect lamp assembly. There is a switch attached to the lamp assembly, which does what, I don’t know. Marked 0413 in image.
Any ideas anyone?

I tried taking the lamp unit itself out, but it was too stubborn and I can’t see how or why it can be faulty.Tracked all wiring and cannot see any obvious problems. Think I shall see how it goes without the lamp. Then buy a new cooker if necessary.
I have learned quite a bit along the way anyhow. Many thanks for your help.As a footnote, just for fun I bought a [4th?] new bulb from a different shop [but same brand – Eveready] and guess what all is well, and still well 6 months later! A faulty batch or just extreme coincidence, especially as I had swapped in and blown the working bulb from the other oven! … but no wonder I couldn’t find anything wrong.
