    Hi,

Really hope someone can help me.

I recently purchased a Candy fridge freezer to replace an extremely noisy frost-free Hotpoint. The noise from the Hotpoint was coming from the fan/air circulation system so I opted for a non-frost free fridge freezer to replace it. No fan = less noise was my (possibly flawed) reasoning.

However, the new Candy made an extremely unpleasant sound, best described as a muffled excited geiger counter when the compressor was running. It seemed to come from the back/middle of the appliance but it could also be heard inside the FF. An engineer came to look at it and instantly declared it was “normal” and I think he said it was the gas circulating.

I have an open plan kitchen/living area so the noise would have driven me crazy so I returned it to the supplier and got it replaced with another non-frost free FF. This time a Hotpoint (I had limited options).

The Hotpoint makes EXACTLY the same annoying noise as the Candy, and the compressor is noticeably noisier as well 🙁

Both FFs were left for 4 hours after delivery before they were switched on.

Are both of these fridge freezers faulty or is this annoying “gas circulating” clicking/scraping noise common to all FFs nowadays?

I’ve never had a fridge freezer that makes this noise before.

New fridges and freezers run on enviromently friendly refrigerant R600a, a common complaint is the circulation noise generated from this gas, it varies from gurgling, squeaking and even breaking wind sounds, once you understand the principles of refrigeration in how the refrigerant changes state within the pipework to achieve cooling by converting from a gas to a liquid and back again to a gas, and in that process the gas boils off in the system collecting the heat from inside the fridge/freezer thus reducing the temperature, the noise is normal and nothing to be concerned about.
