    Hello,

I’m experiencing a bizarre issue with my SMEG WDI147D-1 washer dryer which keeps tripping the RCD.

The machine turns on fine when moving it’s dial and the LCD display lights up, to select a program.

However – when pressing the start button to start a program and you hear the door lock, it trips within one second. The door cannot be opened at this point as the lock is engaged.

When trying to turn on the power again while it is in this state, it immediately trips the RCD.

if, however, I manually release the lock from inside the machine and open the door, the LCD display does come on again when switching on the machine, but again, as soon as the start button is pressed and the door locks, it trips within a second.

Can I assume the door lock is the issue here? Or could it still be another component?

Additionally, very strangely, the machine only now works when it is connected to a long extension lead. The start button is pressed, door locks, and the cycle runs as normal. I’ve ruled out the wall plug socket being the issue as any other appliance works just fine in it. I’m not going to use the machine using the extension however as I’ve read that can damage it further.

Would anyone know what might be going on here? Thank you for your help!

are you sure the extenson lead you are using has an earth. it could be a broken wire in the lead or it could be a garden lead with only 2 cores

the fault you have is an earth fault. most likley components are heaters and motor

since its a washer dryer i would start with the dryer elements that on most washer dryers are at the top

find the element connections. start the machine and wait for it to trip. unplug and disconnect bot the wires to the dryer element. make sure they cant touch anything then re apply the power and see if it trips. if no you have found it. If yes then try the same with the washe element

Thank you very much for your quick reply Dave.

Upon opening the plug of the extension wire, I can see it is earthed – but you’re right, it may be faulty as when I try it with any other extension, it trips.

i will now go through the machine and test any faulty components by disconnecting them one by one and starting the cycle accordingly. Thank you for pointing me in the right direction!

    Hi Dave,

Just to update – I traced the fault to the washing machine heating element – I disconnected it and the machine worked. Then I took it out and it was completely scaled and partially burnt!! Have now ordered a new one.

Thank you so much for your help! Much appreciated!
