ParticipantI’ve had this washer dryer for about three years. For the last couple of weeks it seems to have been a bit temperamental – not beeping when finished on occasion and the timer showing the full programme time that you’d see at the start rather than the usual zero. Today, it blew the main fuse box. Have switched it off at the mains for now.
I’m wondering whether to try to get a repair or just replace it – does it sound like an expensive repair?!July 11, 2020 at 12:34 pm #470521electrofix
Moderatorwhen you say blew the main fuse box are you talking about the RCD trip or an MCB fuse

ParticipantHi Dave
Just looked as I didn’t understand the question!! RCD 🙂July 11, 2020 at 2:13 pm #470523electrofix
Moderatoryou say it blew the fuse box but modern fuse boxesw have 2 kinds of trips
RCD’s which detect earth faults these normally have a test button and when they trip turn off lots of circuits
MCB’s which is like the old fuses. This stop over currents and when it blows only switches off the circuit its protecting
depending on what has tripped will help figuring wahts blown on the washer

Moderatorbrilliant
now a lot depends on your level of skill to diagnose this
most likely components to cause this are heaters and motor
you have 2 heaters and a motorto accomplish this you could try disconnecting each component and after making the disconnected wires safe turn on to see if it trips
or if you have access to a multimeter and can use it check each component for earth faults

ParticipantLevel of skill = absolutely zero!!
Does that fit with the fact that the timer was showing the start time at the end of the wash, and the occasional lack of beeps when the cycle had finished?
and does it sound like an expensive repair? If you can tell that from my description? Wondering whether to call someone to take a look or just replace it.July 11, 2020 at 3:11 pm #470527electrofix
Moderatoralways a hard one to determine
was it making any kind of odd noises. If you spin the drum is it smooth or can you hear a clicking ?
how often do you use the tumble dryer ?

ParticipantHi Dave
We do hear a clicking when we turn the drum and there has been a noise when drying – as if there is something hard in the drum.
Use of the dryer varies but can be many times a week in winter.

Moderatorif it click when it turns and the clicking is faster than the drum
what i mean is if the drum was catching it would probably click once per revolution but the motor runs about 10 times faster so spinning the drum slowly if the click is fairly fast its probably the motor. you can prove this if you took the back cover off and slipped the belt off. if the drum no longer clicks then its probalby your motor causing all your problems

Moderatori dont know your correct machine but picking one at random Zanussi want £199 for the motor
https://shop.zanussi.co.uk/laundry/washing-machines/motors-pumps/washing-machine-motor/p/3792614012
dont rely on this being correct as i would need the PNC number off the label to be accurate
have you checked if its covered by any kind of parts warranty. A lot of machines are covered for free parts if the manufacturer is paid to fit them. In this case it would be a good deal. You could also moan a zanussi and see what happens. no manufacturer would want their machine to fail this quick with a major fault
