ParticipantHi everyone, I’m a newbie here so please excuse if this has been covered before – I’ve tried searching with no luck.
I have a Smeg DFD6132X with a strange problem where it won’t restart correctly when paused during a wash cycle.
From cold I can stop and start without any problem and when the wash first starts all is ok.
Once the machine has run for sometime if I pause it then when I try to restart the wash pump attempts to start but make a loud grumbling noise and seems to run slow. There is water spraying from the bars but not with enough pressure to spin them around and you can feel vibrations through the machine case.
Oddly if I then run a pump out and restart from empty the wash pump runs ok again?
If I don’t touch the machine it will complete the full cycle most of the time but occasionally not on the longest cycle. Well it does complete but doesn’t rinse correctly due to the above.
I suspected the start cap was failing when hot but I’ve replaced that and it’s still the same so now I’m thinking motor but I’ve had that in bits and can find anything wrong with it.
I’m happy to replace the motor but worried that might not resolve the issue so I thought I’d ask if anyone on here has ever seen a fault like this and could shed any light on it?
Thanks in advance.

ParticipantFairly simple really Dave, to add or remove items mid wash 🙂
If I run the machine on the longer cycles where it does a full cold rinse then a longer hot wash it will then not restart the pump correctly for the final rinse cycle.
I’ve always been able to pause and restart the machine although it’s not something I do regularly. I referred to pausing the machine in this case as I thought it would make it easier to explain the nature of the problem. i.e I can re-create the long cycle problem by pausing.
Cheers,

Moderatorin a way the fault makes no sense. it wont restart properly but if you drain and refill it will
there are only 2 things different i can think off
1 heat
2 foamboth disappear if you end programme and refill

ParticipantThanks for replying Dave, I think it maybe heat related as I can’t see any foam in the system when I open the door and if I don’t pause it and just open it there is clear water still coming out of the jets but the bars never rotate so I guess it’s low flow / pressure when it’s noisy.
As a test tonight I ran it for 18mins on a cold rinse and paused it a couple of times with no issues. I’m wondering if maybe heat is affecting something in the pump body rather than it being an actual motor issue, I know you can buy replacement bodies but do you know if these include the impeller? If so I might give one a go.
As you can probably guess I know very little about dishwashers but I do work with much larger motors and pumps and I’m struggling to get my head around this. Do you happen to know if the motor is speed or power controlled in any way or is it just a straight on/off at each start up?.

ParticipantDo you see any errors from self-diagnostics system? There are some troubleshooting solutions in dishwasher’s manual on page #38. Check it.
